Well another take on 3D printing can be found here. Look out I can see John S expanding into new areas of manufacture and hopefully they will be swarf free, if not then it really will be a PITA frown.

The article also covers a more serious aspect for 3D printing for aircraft spares.

          Cheers

            Hi Tony.

I wonder if those printed houses will stink and outgas for a month like some RP models do now. Might need a chainsaw to remove all the internal supports for the overhanging roof features. The supports if done the way FDM is now, there would be about 10X the material used in the supports as for the walls…..

I think I'll stick to spruce lumber, plywood, and bricks for house construction (just on cost and strength alone) for the foreseeable future.

An ABS or PLA printed house wouldn't be very good where I live, with -40 deg C and 100 km/hr winds a few days a year (slam the door and shatter the house!) and in summer +30 deg C a few days! (watch your house soften and sag)

              Hi Jeff

I think if you read the small print you will find that they are using concrete, not ABS. Not clear what they do about the support problem though…

              Regards,

              Tony

I helped set a CNC rig up at Loughborough University a few years ago. They wanted basically a 3D printer that could print concrete to study different designs.

One of the main ones they wanted to print and study was a large model of a termite mound because apparently these structures keep a constant temperature and they wanted to study how.
