X3 milling machine motor

The motor on my X3 milling machine has expired (actually I think the lower bearing may have gone, it may be repairable).  I have always felt that the machine is underpowered as the spindle speed drops significantly when taking what I would consider to be fairly light cuts with fairly small (10mm) cutters.  I have heard that different motor speed controllers help.

 

Any experience or views on upgrading the motor/speed controller would be gratefully received.
