A plunge cut works just as well on a steel pully. Ian S C

        Hi Pekka,

I ground a v-tool a bit sharper to match 40 degrees on my angle gauge.

Procedure is simple – set index wheel to 0 just as tool contacts the work. Plunge in 2.5mm.

Wind out, advance to slide across 2.34mm and repeat.

I made the key seats in the pulleys by filing.

For the J section poly vee pullies an 11 tpi thread chasher is a bang on fit.

I know the purists will say the angle isn't correct but been making these for ages like this.

Some pulleys run 8 hour days, 6 days a week at 9,000 rpm.

            John,

I had a chemistry teacher who professed taht the only chemistry worth doing was 'bucket chemistry' – I think you share his pragmatism

Now all working. My first motor pulley rattled like hell ;-( remade it with a better fit on the spindle and whisper quiet. I'm afraid of leaving teh thing switched on without realising it!

              Thank you,

MichaelG. & All. Thank you very much.

I actually have a thread mill insert, and I was eyeballing it, but it's not right pitch, nor correct angle…..

To be pedantic – I think you mean Michael Rennie . Unless you aren't referring to the 1951 classic!!!

John H ….quite so.( maybe should have corrected my "spelling /memory" by looking up the ref first)and besides my guess at the spelling of KLAATU might be worse

….but I think the sentiment is still valid.smiley

                      "Gort. Klattu barado niktu!"

Did anyone else spot it on the wall of one of the offices in Close Encounters?

Hardly word perfect Gray, at least it proves I didn't cheat and look at Google first. It should be:

                        "Gort. Klaatu barada nikto"

Here's a cutter insert for the PolyVee enthusiasts

I wonder if they are available in the UK. ???

At a minimum order of 100 I doubt it Michael, there are not many people cutting 'V' belt pulleys at the moment and they are all on here !

There are some highly specialised tool bits from that firm and mainly for high production rate machines.

If an 11Tpi chaser does the job then OK. thats what I will use if I need to cut a pulley. I know I have one.
