Well, I've pretty much finished building and installing the new workshop – a definite upgrade from the old wooden shed. Just need the time now to proceed as instructed on my new T-shirt – bought for me eat sleep shed repeat.jpgby my daughter for fathers day!

Will you cry when you scratch the varnish and cutting oil turns it black ??

Haha no, I wasn't really sure what to use for the bench top, so I went with 2 overlapping sheets of 22mm ply with a top of hardboard that I can replace if needed ever. But of course hardboard swells so I figured yacht vanish to seal it. It did end up with a nice shine however- better than I've ever managed on anything that is actually supposed to be shiny!

The strip of conduit like in a lab is a great idea. I'd be tempted to add 5v and 12v outlets, having discovered how brilliant sockets with USB chargers built in are.

Y thx Neil – I wanted all the cables etc to be out the way so I have power, Ethernet, USB for the DROs and touch screen monitor etc and VGA round that side and the other opposite bench is for electronics so again lots of USB etc for logic analyzer, oscilloscope, Arduino.

As a tip for anyone thinking of the trunking option – work out how many of each output you need then times by 1.5 or even 2! It's much much easier to put them in initially than add extras after.

That comment about the number of sockets is spot on. When I built my workshop I thought I had overdone the number of sockets but have still needed to add some more over time. It is also important to think about the location of the sockets since certain areas of the workshop need more than others.

I like sockets mounted onto the front of benches to stop trailing leads dragging things off. Not always handy for fixed machines but I do tend to hard wire these in.

I am planning a new small workshop at the new house for sometime next year and the main front section of the benches will be 4" x 2" thin box section with boxes cut out with the plasma to take metal clad fronts and a RCD ring connecting these all up.

Rear mounted boxes for machines will be drops from a 2" trunking ring that runs round at ceiling height and drops down in 20mm plastic conduit [ because I have shed loads of it and fittings ]
