Over the last 6 months the engagement of the crosslide feed had been getting harder and it also starting to jump out of gear.

Taken the saddle off to have a look and I suspect the sliding gear that engages the saddle feed and cossslide feed looks worn on the crossslide side. See photos

      What do you think?

As yet I need to contact Sarcoma to see if they have spares.

However I am struggling to figure out how to get the gears out the casing

Looks like a dog clutch to me rather than gears, and I have guessed they were 'good enough'.

Is the loose circlip on the shaft top right naughty? Almost certainly meant to clip into the groove above the lower right hand side gears to stop them walking along their shaft. Possibly it not being in place allows the gear to move enough to foul the dogged gear you suspect is worn.

Thanks, dog gears, could not remember what they were called

So you think engagement looks fine then?

I knew you would spot the circlip cheeky

            My doing blush

              ——–

Dog clutch not dog gears, my Holbrook B8 has a single tooth Dog clutch which allows instant reversing for screw cutting

I think they look worn – the bottom sliding gear dogs are rounding off – compare engagment in top photo with that in the lower..

..but is it a cause or a symptom?

                  Hmm interesting

Symptons, when using crossslide it sometime jumps out of engagement. Also can sometimes be difficult to engage

It looks like the worn teeth are sacrificial

It also looks like you could file them down slightly to improve engagement

I would buy a spare part anyway, if the lathe was my long term pal

                    Is this your manual?

Those dogs don't have to transmit much power, after all you can move the cross-slide by turning the handwheel, so even if they are worn a bit they should still be more than adequate.

I think I'd be looking closely at any detents in the operating mechanism, it sounds like a classic – hard to engage so doesn't go fully home and then can jump out easily.
