Looking for a fixed steady for my wm280VF lathe – does anyone know of any compatible types/styles? Most be able to take 40mm tube.

Also does anyone know of any mods to use a bearing type roller on the fixed steady as I will be mailnly using it for aluminium tube (dont want it gouge)

      thanks

It is not clear from your post if you are looking for a spare to modify or you do not have a fixed steady at all. The lathe when supplied should have had a fixed steady with it. In any event , a first point of call should be Warco themselves.
I should be a simple job to make new fingers for the steady and incorporate a small ball or roller race. Ideally this race should be supported on either side by the new fingers,i.e. forked ends. If the loading is light you could get away with fixing the race to one side of the finger.

Got the lathe second hand and the fixed steady was lost by the previous owner.

It’s not a warco lathe. However I think it is the same model with different paint and tbh I find warco to be VERY expensive for spares – hence asking if there is any other compatible steadies for that model. I will try them though.

            Thanks for the reply

For the sort of light use you need you could make a steady, if you have welding gear just weld a large ring to a base, with a clamp screw and plate, for the basics, can even make it from wood. They don’t have to be very precise because the fingers are adjustable. Just make sure it’s set square across the bed. There has been some discussion of this on this site earlier.

For a one off use, you can make a wooden one quite simply. Perhaps I’m spoiled, the local cabenet maker is just round the corner, and he has a scrap bin at his gate (fire wood is the idea), and he often has useful off cuts, MDF and plywood, and sometimes some real wood. Ian S C

                  Update: Emails Warco and they wanted £65 + £7.50 p&p + vat
                  = A total of £85.50 for the fixed steady……….

                  Rang AMADEAL and they wanted £19 + £9.50 p&p inc vat = total £28.50

                  For EXACTLY the same part.

Got some moxy those Warco chaps. Needless to say i got the warco one.

Are you sure about that as Amadeal list a steady for their 180 for £19 not the 280!!

teh 280 ones have a fine thread adjuster for each finger unlike teh 180 ones shown on Amadeals site and the fact they will be 50mm too low

Yep – I saw the same thing and double checked with him. They havent actually got the 280 fixed steady listed, but it was the same price

I have a theory why they do the steadys for a cheap price, PM me if you want to know

Perhaps because they sell their verison of the wm280vf not supplied with the steadies, then sell them on for extra?
