Could any one of you good people point me in the direction of a link for a belt drive conversion kit for my WM14 small mill? I have managed to totally sacrifice the sacrificial gear in the drive train and this might be an opportune moment to consider a belt drive.

There are a number of conversion kits available to buy.  When I wanted to fit one to my XJ12 mill (many, many moons ago), I imported a kit from the USA from https://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=2560 But note that it is NOT suitable for all mini mills.  I failed to read the warning and found, that when it arrived the spindle pulley had too large a diameter bore and ended up making one to fit my mill.

I have an extract from a website – again American – in the form of a pdf, which has dimensioned drawings of all the parts required to carry out the conversion.  It is of course in Imperial measurements.  PM me your email if you’d like a copy.

Amadeal, in the UK, also supply a conversion kit

        https://www.amadeal.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?WD=conversion% but20belt&PN=Belt%2DDrive%2DConversion%2DKit%2DAmadeal%2DXJ12%2DMilling%2DMachine%2DAMA_SP_XJ12_CONVKIT%2Ehtml#SID=32

but the same issue with the spindle size would, I assume, apply.  An email to them might clarify matters.

P.S. I’m not sure that Little Machine Shop will send to the UK, if that’s where you are, since the British Empire expelled Europe.  You might get stung for import tax and VAT as well.

The Warco (Weiss style)and the Amadeal/LMS (SIEG Style) machines are not the same

There was a day when the US PO would send parcels reasonably priced to the UK. Those days finished long before Brexit was thought of.

When did the US join the EU anyway?

I modified mine using inspiration from http://mikesworkshop.weebly.com/mill-belt-drive-conversion.html

The pulleys were bought as spares for a Taig/ Peatol lathe… I think that that idea came from either a magazine article or a post on this forum… sorry.. I can’t remember the details..

Its been working very well for a lot of years… still on the same belt

I hadn’t meant to imply that the USA was in the EU, but they did have a trade agreement with the EU which doesn’t apply any longer since Brexit, hence the import taxes etc.  At the time that I ordered the kit from the States, I was living in France, anyway, but that was nearly 20 years ago.

                  Just for info:

These people ship ‘Little Machine Shop’ products to the UK

EU and USA do not have a free trade agreement, so brexit made no difference to UK/USA trade

Can we keep to the belt conversion discussion.

Thanks for all your suggestions gents, but unless there is an off the shelf guaranteed fit I fear that, getting quite long in the tooth, that I might get into more trouble trying to fabricate something. At the end of the day a new gear is £23 + vat and will take no more than an hour to fit.

Michael, have you seen this thread where most of the problem is the plastic gear not fully engaging so the load is only being taken by half the tooth width. May be worth checking gear movement when you fit the replacement as the slightly larger WM18 may well have the same issue as your WM14.

Warco’s website shows a belt drive version of the WM14, so…Are they willing to offer a belt drive conversion kit?  Or point you to someone who does?

It comes out the factory with the belt drive and there are a lot of differences that are unlikely to make it a retro fit or cheap.

                                Jason,

Just to point out that Weiss have been one of our largest suppliers for the last 15 or so years. We have no connection with Sieg.

It was more the “style” I was commenting on than the actual factory which may not be either.

Your XJ12 , LMS 4962 and the X2 have a similar rack and pinion type rise and fall to the head and the fine feed is stuck on the side.

                                  xj12

                                  x2

But the Warco possibly from Weiss has a leadscrew with handle at the top and the fine feed within the head

                                  wm14

This would make it very unlikely that the kit you or LMS sell for your machines will fit the WM14
