          Beautiful!

Is the reversing gear original on this engine, or have you made your own?

              Hi Michael,
Congratulaions on a beautiful piece of workmanship.

This model has big nostalgic overtones for me as this is the very model that took me from aeromodelling into model engineering. Sadly I never did get very far before other interests and lots of overseas working led to other things and it never got resurrected with the same passion as when I first saw it. Perhaps if it were to now I should call it ‘Re a Wake’ .

I did make the boiler to the original drawings and refurbed a very delapidated Double Ten. That still sits forlornly on top of a wall unit waiting vainly in hope for ‘the day’.

The shadows still sit under the bench along with the assembled keel, the timber for the planking and a large jar of copper nails and roves. The three 1972 issues of Model Boats it first appeared in are still carefully stored but with the other interests I have it is unlikely it will ever materialise. Yours is only the second I have seen finished, one was built locally and fitted with a Cheddar plant and again was also beautifully built.
Next Feb will be forty years since it first appeared – now where has that gone

Thanks for sharing it – if you have more images of building the boat itself beside those on your album – I would certainly like to see more

              Regards – Ramon

                Hi Ramon,
Thank you for your comments and interest, I havet pictures of every stage of the build from stem, keel and transom to fitting the inboard water tanks,
I used mahogany for the planking all cut from discarded window frames which I fortunate to know a double glazing company that replaces wooden frames with UPVC,
otherwise they end up in a skip.
This is a link to my MBM forum topic with the build thread.

                Regards Mick

Thanks Mick I shall look forward to viewing it later, though as my wife is wont to say at such strategic moments “Do you think that’s wise dear?” No I think I’m safe from another distraction – I’ll just enjoy looking

                    Hi Mick,

Thanks for the impressive picture here, the boat is a testament to your skills. I’d love to see more.

I had a look at the link you gave for your build. I saw the text but there were no pictures. Do you know if there is there a problem on the MBM end or is it at my end? I use XP with FireFox 9 (beta),

                    Best regards and happy Yuletide,

Well I have to say fantastic and looks exhibition quality. Congratulations on building such a fine model.

Will look forward to the build pic’s.

                        Hi Ramon, Terry, & Bob,
Thank you for your kind responses, I put the link to the build log on MBM because there are 163 photos of Wide A Wake build and 69 photos of the engine & boiler build, it is possible that the reason you can only see text is you might have to be a member of the forum. If you do not want to become a member I will put pictures on here but as you will appreciate it will take some time.

I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a happy healthy 2012

                              hi Mick,

I joined MBM and was able to view the wonderful pictures of your marvellous build and it was well worth it. A lovely build. I once had an ambition to build a scale model of a friends Broads sailing boat. It was a Leading Lady class (one of six in the class) bought from Herbert Woods yard at Potter Heigham for a relative pittance when the sailing boats were being sold off.

She was 32 foot long with a 12 foot beam, shallow draft for the Broads navigation,  and 400 square feet of Bermuda rig, A truly lovely sight. She sailed beautifully and we loved to shoot the bridge at Potter Heigham itself under full sail until the last minute when we dropped the mast, sails and all onto a rear pushpit crutch, then raised them immediately we were through and carried on sailing as if nothing had happened. Grand times!

Thanks for the build, it was worth joining MBM for your beautiful images, and it has stirred, teased and prodded into wakefulness a lost corner of my brain that I had forgotten existed.

Best regards for a happy and peaceful Yuletide,

                                Hi Michael,

I mean it looks like a ‘glass case’ model, some folks might be reluctant to risk it ‘out on a pond’. I was wondering if you have actually steamed it up and sailed it?

                                  Hi Neil,
Thanks, now I understand, yes it has been steamed but not yet sailed, my problem is I
am very limited as to where I can sail, my only option is of the sea front on Canvey Island
which depends on tide, weather contions and river traffic on the Thames which has increased with large Container ships which can cause up to a 1 metre swell coming in to the beach.
So basically .it will be mostly a working display model.

I will eventually take a video of her under steam when the opportunity arises.

Crikey, you would be a very brave man to take her on the Thames. Don’t any of the London Parks offer a safer solution? She’d look fine cruising along the Serpentine

Its not as easy as that, I no longer drive, I have a severe back problem, Im 78 and the boat weighs 40lbs.

Hi, complete build log of Wide A Wake,

My next project is building a Stuart V Twin oscillator and boiler from plans, so far I have made a pattern for the standard to be cast in gunmetal.
