I have been looking at a couple of commercially made, limited edition  models of some classic British cars marketed by Vitesse at a scale of 1:43 and another (diecast) model by Road Signature at a scale of 1:18, both originating from China. My query is this. Why the odd ball scales 1:43 an 1:18?

I think 1:43rd is similar to O gauge so you can play with your trains and cars together.

1:18 – from Imperial days – a foot and a half to an inch

A foot and a half to the inch would make a model 18 times larger!

Possibly mixing up 1/8th scale which is 1 1/2″ to the foot

Lego people are sort of taken to be 1:42. You can run your 1:18 car with an Alchin traction engine and park it at the station where your “7 1/4in” loco is waiting.

Badly explained on my part – 18 inches in real life equates to 1 inch on the model – or in other words, a foot and a half on the real thing equates to 1 model inch….

You can run your 1:18 car with an Alchin traction

Allchin was 1/8th  (1.5″ to the foot) not 1/18th
