Badger used to make (may still make) a proper double-action airbrush, capable of taking a small jar-type resevoir. IIRC, it was called 'Tornado', and was popular (perhaps intended for) those who did T-shirt decoration. Good enough coverage for 5" gauge loco components, I would have thought, and capable of reasonable fine work too. It was sold at what seemed an almost bargain price.

It's not considered a good idea to put etch primer through a good-quality airbrush, but I've used a cheapo single-action airbrush for the stuff without destroying the thing.

+1 for Duncans Badger "air brush". Mine is over 35 years old and has been used on all sorts of projects. I've even sprayed the front wing of a car with it and achieved decent results. At the time I bought it I did manage to aquire some larger glass jars for it, but looking around now they don't seem to be available anymore.

Airbrushes are great for smaller items. Acrylic paints make them much more user friendly than my teenage struggles with enamels back in the 70s!

Yes, don't knock rattle cans for larger areas of flat colour. Even I can use them… this was a kit, I used nitrocellulose primer, topcoat and lacquer:
