Hi, can anyone point me in the direction of a Babbitt / white metal supplier in the UK, I need to make some new bearings for a Petter engine.
      Thanks

          Hi Dougie,

I struggled to find a source for a similar job and eventually I contacted Hoyt who suggested contacting http://www.jelbearings.co.uk/index.php

As well as remetaling bearings they will sell small amounts of suitable bearing metal without all the surcharges of a small order.

          Hope this helps

          Peter

Lots of bearing info here, might be useful ? Big end bearings for Jowett cars etc historical info on plain bearing material development.

                Regards John

Whitemetal is still used extensively on preserved locomotives and rolling stock for axle bearings and some other purposes . If your other researches don’t bear fruit visit any of the preserved railways with repair shops and ask both what they use and where they get it from .

PS : Don’t confuse the whitemetal sold for ornamental castings and model kits with the engineering grade whitemetals – same family of alloys but different composition and characteristics .

In preservation I have used Summit Solder Products, they are part of another firm and i am not sure they use the name, but here is their website.
