You are wise to plan a bit of practice work before starting on the good stuff. Like Jason above, I made a 10V on my Unimat…the castings came with the lathe..but before starting I made a simple oscillator for practice. If something like that does not appeal, why not make a few simple accessories for the lathe, like a tailstock die holder, knurling tool, and so on. There are plenty of simple things that will come in handy later, and it is better to make your first mistakes on something easily replaced.

"Ask and ye shall receive scrap metal!"

Something like that anyways. Just been to the manufacturing department on a begging mission. Was given some decent lumps of (from left to right) mild st, Ali, 304 st/st and brass. Should be able to make some good swarf with those!

Well done Ben they will get you started and provide some practice, have you asked manufacturing to start a "Ben Box" i.e. save offcuts and ends for you, can never have enough material.

                Ben

                S50 model.

The early ones had a round full circle crank as opposed to the latest ones which have a circle with bits chopped of it.

Each to their own, buy I always think the full circle crank is more prototypical ?

Plenty of pics of the different types on google so you can judge for yourself.

Thanks for the heads up. My kits got delivered to work today. I've got a busy weekend ahead but next week should be able to start having a good look through the plans and material and start thinking about how I'd like to do it. Will certainly have a look at some pictures of completed engines for now.

Not a bad idea but judging by the state of the scrap boxes I should be able to just grab the odd bit as I need it. There was a nice bit of 1/2" x 12" brass bar there though. Might need to acquire that.

I've had a look at some of the simple 'beginner' engine projects and they all seem to be oscillating engines. I'm sure this would be the sensible place to start but they just don't do anything for me. I much prefer slightly more scale looking engines.

I bet they're great for beginners though so they might do something for you (and me), they'll certainly help simplify an already complex undertaking I'd imagine. How are you getting on with your lathe?

I have a 7 x 12 which I bought second hand with a vertical milling attachment. This didn't work well mainly because the attachment was not on the centreline of the spindle, being attached where the compound fits. I have seen ready made adaptors on ebay which address this offset problem which would allow milling up to about 3" to be done
