Which Lathe

Hi

I am looking to move up from my present Myford Super 7.

 

I need a lathe with at least 1.75″ bore in the spindle.

 

Suggestions on lathes and rough estimate on what I am looking at cost wise would be appreciated.

Probably something like a Harrison M350 or M390 or a Colchester Mascot the good thing is you may well pick one up for what Myfords charge for a good spec Super 7.

 

What are you making on that, nice traction engine by any chance?

No not a Traction Engine.

 

I have some 28″ lengthz of 1.5″ steel that I need to thread very accurately.

 

I will mount a Spider both front and rear of headstock spindle  then adjust till I get ,.0005″ runout

 

This will be an ongoing project.

Probably £1,000 to £2,000 range should turn up something private / E-bay depending on your luck and exactly what condition will do.  Rather more from a dealer. Need to factor moving expenses too.  Colchester Triumph 2000 is the common one to easily take over 1.5″ in the bore.  Big lump for the home shop and, being well known, usually a bit pricey relative to condition.  Master 2500 is 1 17/32 bore, which maybe just enough, and seems to go relatively cheaply on flea-bay.  Elliot Omnispeed seems to be a good buy at the moment, if I recall correctly the spindle bore is bigger than on the older, Cardiff, equivalents.

Or you could just get something with a long bed and hold one end in a chuck, the other supported in a fixed steady.
