Any one any ideas where I can get imperial taper pins from? This appears to be rather an obsure size.

Can I use a longer lenght in next size up (3/16) and cut it short ? Not that I can find any of those either.

I am not sure what size you are looking for. I buy from these guys from time to time. Great service.

Hi Mark I would get a longer pin fit it into the hole, checking that it is clean tap it in lightly, mark the cut length with a junior hacksaw, remove the pin and cut to length and finish the ends, job done. Lots on internet try RS components it dosnt matter if it is metric or imperial but metric measure small end and imperial measure large end.

That is not a standard size but 3/16" is, the reamers are sized to match both available from EKP

I turn my own. Set the topslide angle using a dial indicator bearing on a piece of stock turned parallel held in the chuck. Adjust topslide until you get the desired number of thou reading over an inch of travel as measured on the topslide handwheel dial. (For such a small angle I don't even bother to work out how many extra thou to wind on the handwheel to compensate for it being on the triangle's hypotenuse etc. So close it makes no measureable difference. )Machinery's handbook etc gives the correct taper for those pins, and the sizes at each end etc.

There is a subtle difference between metric and imperial tapers, imperial is 1:48 and metric are 1:50. I don't know if this is of real practical importance but if you have a choice I would go with the matching option.

Problem solved. They actually turned out to be 3/16" and my (almost) local Apex Fasteners in Slough had them over the counter. I was convinced they were a #1 (11/64th) but obviously not.
