I don't think its a standard product, there are companies that will centerless grind bar but thats likely to be a bit costly unless you want a fair bit.

Are you actually looking for precision ground or just something with a ground/brushed look? if its the latter then when I use it in furniture I just by 303 and spin it up in the lathe and use a scotchbrite pad to give a nice look

SDP/SI sell stainless steel rod among other things and apparently are represented in the UK.

3, 4, 5 & 6mm stainless I get from Noggin End is pretty straight although not ground. Its fine for shafts (for me) but if you want hardened (and smoothed?) stainless shafting try IGUS. (http://www.igus.co.uk)

Originally known for their polymer bearings they now have a wide range items including linear bearings and shafts.

I've no connection other than being a customer.

Thank you everyone for your help.

I am going to build Bogstandards twin engine and I was looking for stainless for the crankshaft, crosshead slides and con rods.

                  Regards

                  Jonathan

You don't really need ground stainless for that, the rod most of the ME suppliers sell will be fine, maybe go for silver steel for the crankshaft.

                      Jonathan,

I see that AJ Reeves still stock Stainless steel in imperial size i dont know if they sell metric, might be worth a try.

If you need to heat treat for the engine part as Jason said it may pay to use one of the usall steels the old EN8 or EN32 if you want to case harden or EN24 or EN32 if you need to through harden

I am not sure if the stainless steels will either case or through harden i use 440C or 17-4PH which will harden without to much difficulty.

                        Hi John

EN8 is a through hardening steel and not suitable for case hardening.

I seem to remember EN32 ws suitable for case hardening but not through hardening but might be wrong as it is probably 35 years ago.

                        regards David

Nothing on that engine will need hardening, you only really need stainless for the valve & piston rods. Precision ground mild steel or silversteel would be good for the crankshaft but not essential.

Metal Supermarkets (http://www.metalsupermarkets.com) may have a branch near you and I have never beaten them for any metal – but – they might be expensive. It is always worth asking the storeman nicely if you can have a look at the scrap box – can save a lot of beer tokens.
