      Dear all,

I am wondering if anyone knows how to balance wheels correctly. I appreciate the procedure of two plates either side of the spokes filled with lead, but there is the issue of how much weight to add to the crankpin in order to represent the weight of the rods. Please let me know your expertise!

      Thanks,

      Stuart

If you have access to back issues of Model Engineer……
          1985; Vol. 154; Issue 3751, page 444
                                      Issue 3753, page 581
                                      Issue 3755, page 706

For a very full technical explanation of forces, etc., involved in wheel balancing, calculations, etc., plenty of formulae with greek letters.  Refers to ‘full-size’ but everything applicable to ‘our sizes’.  In time-honoured M.E. style refers back to other articles, but these three articles are a complete stand-alone series, the third part (issue 3755) is further clarification of the previous two articles.

Martin Evans writes about wheel balancing in his ‘Roedeer’ series.  This is a very brief  but very accessible explanation of the theory with a worked example to show how to calculate the weights required, you can leave your ‘Teach yourself Greek’ book on the shelf for this one.

          2000; Vol. 184; Issue 4116, page 358
As above but Martin Evans now writing about ‘Greene Queen’.  Basically the same article as above but easier to read as the layout and presentation is better.

            Dear Weary,

Thanks for this information, I think I have the ME from 2000 that you mentioned somewhere in the loft so i will dig it out. I appreciate your comments about learning greek-I am looking for a simple ‘weigh all rods and divide by number of drivers’ type of mathematics for novices like me!
