Thanks for all the helpful replies.

      Martin.

Good job Martin. Isn't it annoying when someone designs and builds something as technically demanding as a stepper motor and then, as in this case, screws up a minor detail?

Muzzer gets a gold-star for his early diagnosis. I'd have been really impressed if he'd identified the actual cause of the short as well, but that's asking too much!

      Dave

Yes, it's very frustrating especially as their performance seems to be very good from what I've seen so far.

I'm in full agreement with you in regard to Muzzer's diagnosis, but because of his failure to indentify the offending screw(s), I'm deducting one (1) point from his score.

Some pics below of the issue.

      Thanks again to all contributors.

      Martin.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with these when you've had time to evaluate them.

        Regards

        David.

There are some clones of the Leadshine "Integrated Easy Servo" products available on AliExpress these days. This example is a 3Nm (Chinese calibration!) closed loop stepper. Like the Leadshine original, it incorporates the motor, encoder and driver in one package. You just supply the 36V PSU and the step / direction signals. If they work like the originals, they are a pretty handy product – and the price (about £80 delivered) is hard to argue with.

Glad the problem was resolved – I'll try to sharpen up my advice next time and go for the extra Smartie!!
