Used to like tapioca, always called it frog spawn, it was a lot bigger than what I can find although I believe Asian shops may have it. School dinners in the early sixties where great, pink custard an all. My mother was a terrible cook, lumpy gravy and custard, brussels mashed in a colander with half cooked or overcooked veg. Lard on toast, dripping on bread and black pudding, boiled not fried, bring them on.

I remember well the postwar Orange juice – extremely concentrated + came in small bottles with a rectangular cross-section – it must have gone on for some years post war as I recall going to the special shop that supplied it + the codliver oil (which we also got dosed with) – with several brothers there was quite a lot of it to go around – we were led to understand it was not safe to take it undiluted.

Ah, well, they would say that, wouldn't they? wink

I *think* we used to take it undiluted, but by the teaspoonful – one for each year of age after meals. Just wish the same stuff was available today.

But you may not want to take it seriously from one who thinks the invention of the cod fish finger was the major culinary advance of the mid-50s…

Morrissons started stocking Lemon puff biscuits last year remember them? 60p..I was buying 6 packets at a time .

Even the older biddy on the till said " Corr i haven't seen those for years ! " If you leave them open they go all sticky and more lemony …lovely ..

Then the price went up to £1.20  over night , and has been ever since , so sorry Mr Morrisson , i'm not paying that much no matter how nice they are..

One of my favourites was a chewing gum, I can't remember the name of it but, the chewing gum itself was pink in an oblong shape and tasted hot and maybe cinamon? The wrapper was red.

HowardT Black pudding should be boiled not fried, with salt and mustard. As Yorkshire pudding is a starter, not eaten with potatoes and beef smiley

If it was pink it could have been Dentyne or Big Red.

Preferred Anglo bubble gum that stuck to your eyelashes if you chewed three lumps and got a really good bubble!

Before Angel delight it was junket – which started to break down and go runny as soon as you took the first spoonful.

I managed to buy some a few years ago but never again! Flaked rice is another that is now becoming difficult to source.

Rich fruit cake and apple pies should be eaten with cheese. Also if either you or your children don't like sprouts, try them with mint sauce

1/2 a century ago, yes, literally 1/2 a century, or 1970 if you like, I was working on my own in a one man job in a (not too) remote outstation, ie away from the city centre. Within the location was a small Belling cooker – single hot plate & small oven. And of course the kettle, after all, being civil servants, yes really, we had to have our cups of tea!

So, after all the waffling, dinner tended to be something like a ready meal for one, made by Birds Eye I think, and consisting of beef in one compartment, mashed potato in another compartment and either peas or, more likely I think, carrots in the third. Bung it in the oven for however long and very tasty it was too. Pudding tended to be 1/2 a Heinz Steamed Syrup/Treacle sponge, which came in a tin along with 1/2 a tin of Ambrosia tinned custard. I was single at the time so cost didn't matter that much.

Anyway, meals for one, or even two are still available, but whether or not Birds Eye I cannot say, probably Sainsbury's own, and so is Ambrosia Custard. But Steamed Treacle Sponge appears to have disappeared. Certainly neither the Co-op or Sainsbury's (our two local big name supermarkets) appear to sell it, although thinking about it I haven't tried Lidl or Aldi, both of which have local outlets.

So, the question is, whatever happened to Heinz Steamed Treacle Sponge?

                            Peter (drooling jaws) G. Shaw

Do you mean this. Tesco had it in the last time I was there. Or do you mean some other sort.

                            Steve.

In effect, yes I do, except that it wasn't microwaveable (I don't think microwaves were generally available back then), and the "Improved Recipe" fills me with foreboding.

But, I have to say that Tesco is currently out of reach to me, being around 9 miles away, although I could get my daughter to order one, but she's out of reach being 14 miles away. I should point out that I am one of those people at high risk so I can't win, can I.

Many thanks for the information, Steviegtr.

It was always my favourite too. I loved the chocolate one too, but they started putting sultana's in.

These are what I have been buying recently , just enough for 1 person . The treacle ones have already been eaten. I'm hungry now.

I remember my Dad keeping chickens at the bottom of our garden, most houses in our street used to keep chickens. We also used to get fresh rabbits, you had to be careful eating them and spit out the bits of lead shot, cooking the rabbit with lead in it frowned on today. Also remember Walls tinned sausages, my memory was they tasted great but the reality was probably totally different. Also Fray Bentos tinned steak and kidney pies, still available today I think. When I was in the Air Force we used to get very tasty steak and kidney puddings, commonly referred to as “baby’s heads”. When I was still at school I remember we used to get Cod liver oil and Malt, which used to come in a big brown jar, far more palatable the just cod liver oil on its own. In those days Victory V lozenges were a completely different recipe, they contained chloroform which you could get addicted to, I was always eating them, recipe was changed to remove the chloroform.

                                                Morty,

Yes, I do have a vague memory of the Yorkshire Pudding bit. Trouble is, after 76 years, the remaining grey cell doesn't always remember everything, although it is surprising just what I do remember from back then and before. But perhaps we had better not start going down that trail!

                                                MichaelG,

Sorry to say I did not follow your trail. Actually, I tell a lie, I did – as far as the first page and when I came up against the Google search thingy which is something new to me, I didn't go any further. This is because in the past I have come across things like that which then proceed to ask for DOB, eye colour and inside leg measurements before they allow you to proceed any further and that is what I thought I was heading into, hence I stopped. I simply will not proceed with anything that looks as if it might be invasive.

As an example, my elder son recently started talking about something called Portal, which I understand, very limited understanding you will realise, is apparently operated by Facebook. Son was suggesting, I think, that perhaps I/we should go for it, however, when I looked into it, I quickly found some small print which said something along the lines of "You agree to give us access to…..", at which point I thought "not on your bleedin' nelly mate! I've managed 76 years without you lot, and I'm damn sure I can manage whatever time's left without you." In any case, there is too much financial & personal info on my computer for me to risk allowing soddin', nosy, American companies possible access to it.

I must admit that I'm slowly coming round to the idea of perhaps having a separate computer purely for the likes of Facebook etc, a computer which has nothing else on it, that they can then search to their heart's content.

So yes, MichaelG, I was remiss on this occasion, and I do apologise. I hope you understand my reasoning behind it.

Actually Michael, there is another point. Although my OP does look like a rant, it was done deliberately for something which might be of interest in these horrible times we are in and thus might take peoples minds of it. I mean, let's face it, what on earth has Heinz Steamed Pudding got to do with Model Engineering!

                                                Regards,

So yes, MichaelG, I was remiss on this occasion, and I do apologise. I hope you understand my reasoning behind it.

                                                  No problem at all, Peter

… I was just bewildered, when I realised that you had only recently been presented with the information you were seeking: You would have found it within seconds if you had pressed the button.

I stripped a cooling tunnel out for Nestle some years ago. I found 2 different wrappers. One said Texan & the other was striper bar. Then when installing Cat 5 cables in the service core I found an original Pontefract cake box. I should have saved them but Dohh. My mum worked at Trebor Bassets in Pontefract in 1940. I worked there installing machinery in 1990. Some things had not changed when comparing to my Mum. The line belts feeding the polishing pans was still operational. Nostalgia eh. An aside was that some 20 years after the Pontefract cakes were discontinued at macky's Cas. You could still smell the Liquorice.

                                                      Steviegtr,

Blimey, you've done it again. Anyone remember those Trebor sweets wrapped up in a tube sort of, the sweets being about 20mm diameter, about 4mm thick on the edges, concave on both sides, multicoloured, and produced a sort of fizzy effect on the tongue? What were they called?
