      … and tattoos.

I'm really tempted to agree – I hate the idea of "self-harm in the cause of fashion".

…but ban them and before you know it, the H&S zealots will have banned anything with a cutter and a motor without bullet-proof guarding round it.

Something that should be banned – large HGV's running on their speed limiter and overtaking others doing the same on dual carriage ways and motor ways. We would all get there a lot quicker if they stopped this and use less fuel. It seems that they should drive to a 10 second rule – if overtaking takes longer don't.

I was saying to my son the other day I wish I had some of the mentality I had when I was a teenager, the bit that enables you to sail through life without being irritated by:- loud music, garden fires, barking dogs, people who can't drive, 'sophisticated' people who are extremely stupid………..

You should have noticed what started to happen probably when you were around 40 or so and resisted it. You probably need therapy now.

Maybe they should just ban common sense, that would save our politicians creating legislation to ban things all the time

At Westminster they've already banned common sense anyway

Hmm… Interesting that breaking the law is not considered to be " unfair" but using undercover means to catch the perpetrator is.

I should clarify that, a couple of weeks ago we were passed by one which was going like the proverbial bat out of whatsit! They passed a number of vehicles on a dual carriageway without using blue lights or sirens to warn of approach.

Nothing to do with unfair, more to do with common sense and road safety.

I assumed this thread was intended to be a bit light hearted as well.

Can you imagine the carnage as they all drove aroung holding their iphones up in front of their faces with the latest app showing a 10 second stop watch as they overtook & videoing it on facebook/twitter as they did it to tell their friends that they had just scored 14889 points in an overtaking manover

You should try driving a vehicle with a 90kmh limiter. Anyone who doesn't drive on it whenever possible is going to struggle to get their work done. Many of them are on such tight schedules they won't have enough hours to get home at the end of the day. Slowing them down any further on dual carriageways etc is going to create an even bigger speed differential between them and 'Us' and that's already the biggest cause of crashes. Spreading them out would make already overcrowded roads even worse – this would be the biggest improvement of driverless vehicles, they ought to be able to run virtually touching at all times. But at that point you might as well just couple them all together, and make all the passenger compartments public. We would need to come up with a name for such vehicles, as 'train' is already taken.

I'm sure you're correct. Sometimes however, someone's light hearted banter strikes a raw nerve. There was a news report last week of an accident on the A34. A woman and her 2 children were killed in the "accident". A young man was arrested for dangerous driving. I have absolutely no connection with anything to do with the incident, but for some reason I was deeply saddened by it.

But let's carry on reinforcing the perception that Home Engineers are GOGs smiley

Being deaf myself, I quite agree with Richard. Unwanted so-called music anywhere – in restaurants for instance – is just a pain. Music also ruins many a good documentary. And, while I'm at it, why are so many public buildings nowadays constructed with such dreadful acoustics? Don't misunderstand me – I like good music, but in the right place.

In the future we should be able to set the levels of voice, effects and music when listening to DVDs at least (it's not as if the technology isn't here!)

There's a TV channel called Bike that often has the "background" music louder than the commentary!

Germany seems to manage with HGVs limited to the inside lane only on autobahns. Why can't we do the same unless whatever is in the inside lane is doing less than say 40 mph. And don't tell me this would prevent drivers fulfilling their quota, managers who knowingly set impossible targets should be prosecuted if the driver falls foul of excess hours.

For some reason or another theres a group of people who just love immense sound. I dont really get it, naturally speaking, we are supposed to abhor loud noises as much as any other creature should if necessary. Loud noises are oppressive and i think it just goes to show how little has been done to accommodate deaf people.

It's still treated like something that can be "cured". It can't, hearing loss is irreversible and permanent. I think it can be used as an excuse to justify inaction.

I had a hearing test a while ago and i passed with the highest grade, although the professional told me that this was good for my age group, as it's actually becoming more prevalent in young people, despite commonly held perceptions about it being only as you get older. So you can't take nuffink for granted.

My hearing has survived the best efforts of Motörhead and Ted Nugent and riding a Trident with a 3-1 exhaust that made your ears ring after 100 miles. My last hearing test was within the expected range for my age. Our village hall has a limiter that cuts power to the stage if the limit is exceeded but this is a joke as you could hold a polite conversation while the band played. Strangely a disco can play at a reasonable volume but a live rock band just trips it straight away. F1 came in for a lot of criticism when the current turbo setup emasculated the sound of the cars and speedway lost some of its presence when they silenced it. Drag racing seems untouched at the moment, maybe the sound is intense but it is very brief.

My hearing has survived the best efforts of Motörhead and Ted Nugent and riding a Trident with a 3-1 exhaust that made your ears ring after 100 miles.

Mine didn't. sad But what a glorious sound a triple (mine was Rocket 3) with 3-1 made! Probably worth the sacrifice.

(Might have been something to do with working in power stations in pre-ear-muff days too.crook )

Fifty years in the shooting sports didn't do my hearing much good, but the real cause of my deafness was a stroke. Audiologists hinted that this was impossible, yet when I helped a leading medical charity research stroke-induced deafness, it was easy to find four examples among stroke survivors in my local community. If I might introduce a serious note in an otherwise generally fun series of postings, don't play games with your hearing, and use earing protection when appropriate. Deafness is no fun. And I'm not a spoilsport – I still love the sounds of powerful bikes and sports cars, follow Formula 1 and bike racing, and I'm still proud to be associated with the shooting sports as a technical writer for a leading magazine.
