I am reviving this thread to share another horror story:

Several years ago, I bought a [good secondhand] Panasonic Lumix G1 camera body, which has been ‘safely stored’ in a zip-lock plastic bag, in a dark place.

It is now so disgustingly tacky on all the matt surfaces that I will either need to strip it all back to shiny plastic, or just bin it.

Moral of the story [I suspect] is that plasticisers leech out from the bag and degrade the matt finish.

      .

P.S. __  when I try a Google search [shopping] for “Propylene Carbonate” it returns mostly results for other compounds … Grrr

        Hi,

Try Isopropyl Alcohol ,this removes soft touch plastic when that’s gone sticky ,leaving a shiny non sticky surface.

Buy a small tin of black tyre paint from Al Frauds, apply after wiping with white spirit & allowing to dry.

Try french calk or talc if you would like it to smell nice, just sprinkle some on and spread it out, it gets rid of the tackiness, worked on mine.

Other than happy long term user try sticky stuff remover from Lakeland no connection. It works to remove stickers from books or more persistent sticky stuff without damaging but do try rest area first. It has a pleasant orange smell upon which it is based I believe. Also wd40 well renowned for also being effective.

As Maurice also found, wiping with IPA has cleanly removed the sticky soft-touch layer from binoculars, a camera body and loudspeaker grille for me.

I have IPA and will probably try it …

I was only interested in “Propylene Carbonate” because it was recommended earlier.

Most of the trouble I have had is not with the hard plastic parts, but the soft rubbery handgrips deteriorating. Sponge can also turn into nasty sticke powder, linings of Mitutoyo and Moore & Wright instrument boxes come to mind, plus light sealing in film cameras.

IPA for me every time. I cleaned off 2 pairs of binoculars and a portable radio. The shiny plastic base isn't as nice as the original which unfortunately, doesn't last!

                        [UPDATE]

Yes, the IPA is working fine on the disgusting goo on the camera body.

I am in no rush, so am proceeding at “Conservation Department” speed angel

Just come across this conversation about sticky rubber parts on cameras. Not tried it yet, but will bear it in mind for the future.
