      Hi All

Have unearthed a small, unopened tin of Myford touch-up paint (purchased from the Myford stall at the Harrogate show a number of years ago) and was wondering what thinners should be used with it. Or more importantly, as it's probably the correct consistency straight from the tin, what should I clean the brushes with after use? It states "Made by Trimite" on the label, but nothing to indicate appropriate solvents. I only have white spirits (turps substitute) on hand at the moment so would need to order anything else.

Second question, on the alloy parts (changewheel and belt covers etc.), should I use an etch primer, red oxide primer, or can the enamel be successfully applied directly to wire-brushed, de-greased bare metal? When stripping them, it didn't look like there was any primer originally.

      Thanks,

      Rob

I have a tin of the same paint and have used white spirit successfully to thin it and clean the brushes, regarding the alloy parts I would be inclined to use an etch primer, be careful which one though, if I recall correctly the Precision Paints etch primer is for brass and copper only, I would suggest Upol acid 8 available from Halfords and no doubt dozens of other places as well, if you want to spray or I think Hammeite do a speciality materials etch primer suitable for galvanised steel and ally.

            Thanks Baz

I'll have to see how difficult it will be to get the etch primer at the moment, but the white spirit info is good news as I have that already.

            Regards

            Rob

Yeah really weird times Rob, I am spraying some bits of loco at present and hoping I don’t run out of stuff. First time in my life I haven’t been able to nip down to the shops for something I am running low on.

I think it is their Q78 alkyde resin paint, have used it (Q78) on other things and although they have their own thinners (CT60), I used white spirit. For spraying up to 15% added.

Mason Paints (late of Derby) also sold Myford Green paint and was a similar product.

Thanks KWIL, it was mainly a question of cleaning – didn't want to use one of my good brushes, then find I couldn't get it off with white spirit yes
