I got this with a lathe I got a while ago and just getting around to want a flycutter. But this is not one….?

Well I don’t think so as the cutter edge is to high.

Looks like it was used to cut a concave surface. You might get away with fitting a cranked cutting tool into the clamp then it could be use dto flycut a flat surface.

yes I agree. I cant think of much else myself. Its a good base for a flycutter aswell I think. I thought its a big job to cut a concave but then accuracy will be good

My guess is it’s an improvised boring bar, intended to machine the inside of a large diameter hole, perhaps just to tidy up chain drilling or a torch cut. Looks crudely made, is unbalanced, and there’s no provision for accurate adjustment of the cutter.    Put together for a particular job or possibly an accessory for an ‘Oil Country’ lathe.

I bet most junk boxes contains a few mysterious home-made tools.  Mine are puzzling unless you know what I was trying to do at the time.  Doubly confusing because not all of them work!

There appears to be lettering engraved on the base, which might imply it is commercial. However the tool holder is definitely a bodge. The small taper shank can’t be very rigid, so I might even agree with SoD and say it was intended to do a light cleaning pass in a bore.

Flycutting a concave surface with a decent cut needs a rigid setup, like this:

I agree with SOD, it would work as a crude boring head. But if the taper is good you can always improve it.
