Ed, I wouldn't get too fussy about the rust, get rid of the surface stuff, sharpen the tool you want to use, and the swarf will clean any other rust off.

If you want cheaper than vinegar, use citric acid.

Thank you Ian, I shall give the tools a go. To be honest, not much rust was removed over night.

Just went to the station to pick up my daughter. I saw a Bentley with a radiator the twin of the one described in ME 4531.

A small triumph today, sucessfully cut a single point thread. Only the second time I have done it. the first being in the apprentice training school at Brooklands in 1980. Made a 1/8 BSP adapter. Minor false start, when I got 56TPI instead of 28 with an error reading the gearbox tables on my Chippie. It fits and seals on my airbrush hose. A small achievement, but a step on the road….

Today my friend and I spent this afternoon sorting out the wiring on the new vans towbar, one problem we had was the pictorial instructions were rubbish, the live feed and signal wire were buried deep in the wiring and took some finding and the instruction showed one way to connect two wires to the PDC when in fact it was the other way round but after six hours of poking, prodding and testing it all now works, the indicator buzzer or so we thought only operates if there is a bulb failure but otherwise a good afternoons work.

Not a bad turnout at the track for clean up duties that have been put off repeatedly owing to rain. Our parking field is treacherous when wet. Only one person got stuck and needed most of the team to assist resulting in muddy hand prints all over his car. Got some support for the idea of a bank hol steam up which we don't normally have in the calendar. And someone gave me 25 quid (though I suppose I will actually have to pay his membership fee into the club account)

Back in time to catch the start of the T20 laugh and the first wicket crying

When out on my motorbike this afternoon it became concerning that something was very wrong when braking. surprise

No marks to anyone for spotting what the problem was. laugh

I rode home just using the back brake with the thought in my mind that if I touched the front brake the caliper may spin round on the remaining (lose) bolt and lock the front up. – This would not have been good. crying

I had the whole assembly off the 306 a few days ago. I think I'll go out and check the job again!

Finished off my rotary broach today. Just need to manufacture some cutters. One of them is an 18 tooth serrated broach which will require making some kind of involute cutter with a 100° included angle across the cutting face(s). I could do a single point cutter but the involute will be an enjoyable challenge I think and gets the brain working.

One day I might get around to making a model

Many thanks to the guys who replied in my other thread about oil seals.

Nick re brakes – Well there's yer problem – those red stripe rims!

Re the OTHER problem – once you've had a change of pants a bit of loctite 242 threadlocker wouldn't go amiss after you find a replacement.

Nick, thats not by any chance a CBR600 F3 is it? not that i know honda breaking systems or anything lol

as for using thread locker, i personally would only use Hylamor blue on it, keeps the bolts in nicely, but isnt as much of a pain to get off if needed

oh and a torque wrench when putting the bolts in 😋

not far off from a pic of the front caliper ☺ yer the hornets are just a detuned CBR, makes the power bands a bit lower down so its easier to ride round town, rather then having to keep it in either the 7k or 11k power bands.

i have spent far too much of my time rebuilding and custom tuning honda engines, had a 1991 CBR6 tuned to the point that upto 100 it out preformed the new blades lol and after that it was just who had the bigger brass monkeys 😀

I had a similar brake problem with a Matchless many years ago, front brake plate anchor bolt fell out, the brake locked and the brake arm sheared through the fork leg. Two way traffic on an A road during a bank holiday weekend and at 70 MPH. It was very exciting for a few moments. I don't think Loctite was about in those days but from then on my anchor bolts got drilled and wired.
