and the last thing you need it times of real crisis is lawyers and accountants

I visit an elderly lady now and then who lived in Edinburgh in March 1941

Around 500 German bombers flew over Edinburgh-(Full of lawyers and accountants) over 2 days and didn't drop a single bomb

They followed the Forth valley river by night through to Glasgow and flattened Clydebank-(almost zero lawyers and accountants). 7 houses out of 12000 went undamaged

      The Clydebank Blitz

So lawyers and accountants are in fact incredibly useful if you don't want to be bombed in a war

It would appear from reports that the imported steel is of inferior quality, GB is renowned for making quality steel.

Perhaps there is a niche market for what is left of our steel producers to make these special steels?

British management is amongst the worst on planet earth, too much hubris and a class system which remains intact to this day. A secret squirrel culture in our corridors of power doesn't help.

We're probably the only industrialised nation which has ever lost 100% of its car industry to foreign interests.

Rolls Royce. unique specialised product. Black taxis. unique specialised product

All foreign owned now, plus many other car companies

Internal politics keeps us from getting ahead as well, Sheffield forgemasters was meant to get a loan to make them one of the top castings makers in the world, a real top tier manufacturer

Sheffield Forgemasters' £80m nuclear parts loan axed

Then in July of the same year…

Secret files reveal lobbying behind axeing of Sheffield Forgemasters loan

The bottom line is this country only does anything really useful for its society after a world war

WW1 gave us the representation of the people act (one man one vote)

WW2 gave us stuff like the NHS

During peacetime in Britain it's a simple case of:

"the more things change the more they stay the same"

Even without that loan, Forgemasters is one heck of a company, the biggest in Europe

Hundreds work on major steel deal at Forgemasters

Forgemasters said the castings would be "some of the largest individual cast components ever manufactured".

Steve Price of Forgemasters said it was an important contract for the firm.

"It is also important for the UK, as one of the few countries in the world and the only country in Europe, with the skills and capacity to produce these ultra-large castings," he said.

Conversely you could say that the report in the G******* about so called "secret files", is a mixture of innuendo and mischief and that in fact the illegality of the proposed loan was in fact correct. No attempt is made in the report to confirm or deny the legal position.

Of course a Government supporter would not want that same government to walk into a EU Law argument if they knew the legal position from within the Industry better than the civil servants/ministers!!

Any legal situation would only have arisen if somebody made a formal complaint to the EU

It's an amazing coincidence how Mr Cook "just happens to be the chairman of a rival steel company" isn't it

A totally amazing coincidence. Yup, no doubt about it.

Back in the 70's we made jackets for the oil industry in Fortes field. These used tubes in many different sizes and steels. British Steel declined to quote. Most came from Japan, they had a method of making tube by rolling strip and wrapping round a mandrel, then welding. They could provide just about anything.

We have new coat stands in the office. Green. Apparently it was higher on the list for improvements than clean loos, carpet replacement etc. What is annoying is that the old steel tube ones vanished without me recycling any of them. Strangely my spirits are uplifted when I see these pseudo trees.

The motorcycle belonged to the late Len Crane who in his early years raced motorcycles and motorcycle/sidecar the Triumph belong to Len and that's about all I can tell you.

Today I cleaned up and ground a piece of 3/8" square tool steel that came with the old lathe I was given.
It is carbon steel stamped 'George Adams of London'
Once hardened and tempered to straw it holds a razor edge and cuts MS like silk, lovely finish.
Not bad for a bit of metal probably 100 years old.

Sorry you are struggling with the new system, Jason.

I've just gone through it for my ME subs (yes I have to pay for ME!) and it is not yet working as it should.

The subscription pages should have a more obvious link for existing subscribers instead of a small 'already a member' at the top.

It's totally separate to the forum which is why you need to set up a new account to manage your sub, but once logged in you should be able to manage your subscription. Unfortunately it calls you a 'member' rather than a 'subscriber' which is a little confusing.

                                  The link people need is:

                                  me.secureorder.co.uk/index.php?force_sid=583inmsjv38391o4t6nd97kmd1&cl=account

You only need to register with one set of details!

Once you have registered you need to return to that page (unfortunately the link becomes dark-green on mid-green) and log in.

Once I had done all that I was rewarded with a page detailing my subscriptions. If you have a pending renewal it will allow you to do this.

I have suggested that a very clear link for existing subscribers is put on the 'subscriptions' pages post haste.

Two thirds of current steel production is from scrap; I suspect that a greater proportion of general purpose steels is recycled than of high-alloy/high carbon ones.
