The Exhibition is only an hour and a quarter from my home so picked my mate up at 08:15 and arrived at 09:30 and joined the queue for the 10:00 opening, we spent three and a half hours wondering around looking at all of the exhibits and chatting to friends and came away with a mag based lamp off the Chester stand for my mill and lathe.

      A good day out.

        Rod,

I've just watched your excellent video, I'm very fortunate in that as a volunteer I get to help run and look after the engines in the museum, I'm also one of the Goffers for the museum so fetch anything in the area which is donated or purchased for the museum, when I go I usually spend several days there as its a 530 mile round trip for me.

Its always good to put a face to a name, I seem to pop up every where wink

Went to the Midlands show for the first time and spent Thursday looking and Friday shopping and found both days very entertaining and fulfilling and even managed to find what I needed.

The size of the halls was perhaps just a little on the small size but seemed to make the whole experience a bit more cosy, though how busy it will be on Saturday and Sunday remains to be seen and may be a bit cramped if serious numbers turn up.

Met some members from the MEM forum and will certainly visit again.

Thanks Harry, thats the best look around that show I've ever had. Comfortable armchair and no pushing and shovingsmiley. I no longer go to Warwick because of the limited space in which to move about.

Had to get a new dehumidifier for the workshop today after the last one started making unhappy noises after only 3 years. Guess it is BER. Funny thing about new one was the box. Undid straps and found the expanded polystyrene base packing was the bottom of the box, no cardboard. On the one hand it saves them over 1sq ft of cardboard but makes it useless as a reusable box – if I needed one.

They do that with washing machines and dishwashers – makes unpacking a lot easier, as you don't have to rip the box to shreds.

Another one from Internal Fire (whilst staying at Cwmhiraeth a few years ago). I think they've built a shed over it by now.

Its been in a shed with a few other engines for a few years.

Its a Ruston 6 cylinder and a nice runner until it popped the end off one of its injectors the other weekend, the second engine is a Petter VJ1 also a runner.

Another sad day in the history of British engineering. The news of even more closures of our steel industry. I can't put into words the sadness I feel for this.

SOS – save our steel industry

I see that China raised its production from around 100M tonnes around 2008 to 700M tonnes last year, no wonder there is too much available to price out our production, just apply an import tax.

We do have deep enough pockets to subsidise UK steel buit we cannot just let it go under, I say this from a national point of view and not from a job preservation one.

I feel very sad for the steel workers. However a couple of stories from the 70s.

1 At one point British Steel, as it then was, was losing GBP1,000,000 per day. At the same time to put that in perspective, I was on a Design Draughtsmans salary of GBP4,970

2 The shipbuilding firm that I was working with, could get steel delivered from Belgium, into it's stockyard on the River Clyde, cheaper than buying from British Steel just down the road. Freight was extra on the local option.

Of course it really is tragic.

                                      cheers, sort of

Problem is once it's gone it will never come back and it could end up with a small number of countries having a monopoly.

One of the biggest reasons for the demise of the steel industry and many coal fired power stations is due to the previous government introducing rules to reduce emissions to set a low standard in the UK. Germany and China pay about half the price for their energy than the UK, so the closure of these big energy users in Britain was inevitable. To make them competitive would mean changing these unnecessary harsh emissions rules. Who is going to agree to that?

Steel production is a strategic industry, nothing much happens in modern society without steel, no steel is what the stone age had to put up with

Everything will be peachy as long as peace and love reign over the global infrastructure which supplies us with steel and other products

If things start to go south then as in 1914 and 1939 Britain will have to create entire industries out of whatever we have left.

The two that spring to mind for me are the chemicals industry and food production, both of which needed a huge government boost because we were so heavily reliant on imports when the trading system became threatened
