What did you do today (2013)

What did you do today thats engineering related? (2015)

A Topic using the first title above was started by someone called JasonB way back on the 20/10/2112. It was changed 14 months later to "What did you do today 2014" & now here we are changing yet again on its 3rd anniversary .

I note that one or two members have already posted remarks about this & I find myself in agreement with them. To me the whole forum is engineering related but this particular post was always the first I looked at daily because of the wide variety covered & yes there is a lot of non engineering posts here but so what, it all adds to the richness of the forum. I will miss Andrew`s posts here & Clive`s bees & many others.

I`ll stop here in case by saying anything else I get banned, however I will say one further thing viz: If it aint broke dont fix it.

        Look, lets get this clear.

We have a whole forum dedicated to hobby engineering in its widest sense.

Every such forum needs a space where people can discuss their wider interests. Any large group of people with a strong common interest (hobby engineering) will have many significant groups within it with other shared interests.

Rightly or wrongly this particular thread (and its predecessors) has answered that need for this forum. As such it has become our forum chat-room.

Trying to close this down is pointless, and is like someone going round a club day or exhibition telling people off for discussing the weather or the football.

Where wider but still engineering-related topics (astronomy and aeroplanes, for example) start taking up too much space, they can get their own topics/threads elsewhere.

I know many users would like to encourage more people to post build threads and reports on their workshop activity. Such reports remain welcome here, but I suspect many people don't feel they achieve enough 'today' to be worth reporting.

I suggest that what we need is a separate workshop progress thread that is dedicated to updates (daily, monthly or less frequent) on workshop and modelling milestones, rather than taking away what has become the liveliest and most varied thread on this forum.

This forum may not be to everyone's tastes, but it clearly does engage the majority. And after all, anyone who finds this thread too wide-ranging is not going to be forced to read it.

Why not just do the obvious thing and create an off topic discussion section ?

If astronomy gets its own section why not 'off topic' ?

Thank you – I was beginning to dispair !

I very much admire those who have the ability and tenacity to produce seemingly endless numbers of wonderful models but , sadly, I'm not in that class! I do get a lot though from the variety of posts on this thread and feel that I have some connection with the regular posters here and may, at times, add something to the discussions. I had feared that maybe I should call it a day but now, thankfully, that will not be necessary.

            Regards

Perhaps we can see how things settle down now, before people ask for any additional changes.

Glad to see common sense prevail.

Looking forward to more bee keeping, astronomy and who knows what else.

Hi, yesterday evening I finished a bit of wood turning that I had started earlier in the week, this was my first bit of wood turning that I've in a serious way. It is a new handle for my Yankee 1005 bench drill **LINK** which I have entered in the up and coming MMEX the week after this week. The old handle was split and although I glued and clamped it back together, however I was not satisfied with it **LINK**. I turned the new one from a suitable file handle that I had, to a close match to the original one.

OK, reprieved. Here's a bit more Bee folklore. Over the last few months despite what the Met. office say the poor old bees have had a rough time and as always the last forage crop for them is Ivy. It so coincided that the fine weather also came with a flush of berries on the Ivy and the bees were going frantic trying to stock up for the winter

Regional reports say that there is no honey to take in Northern Ireland and Wales is hit too.English Counties also report no honey crop of importance. Meanwhile the local Bee/honey sales shop is advertising for Kent Honey and no doubt so will others. I know this shop owner well and he will not be able to fill his quotas to a couple of Supermarkets locally.

I watched my bees and then had a look and in just a few days they had filled half a box of combs with honey, as I always I leave them one box form themselves I was able to take 1 box of 12 combs and another later. The first turned out to be Raspberry honey, and the second was Ivy honey. i have had to blend the two to make it palatable as the Raspberry was a bit sharp and not to everyone's taste. The reason for the raspberry was that the hive sits alongside the raspberry patch so they were able to work it even when conditions were poor.

The 4 new hives I set off this year are busy and seem to be doing very well and as they have one box on top of the Brood box will survive the winter and will only need feeding in the Spring if it is very bad weather.

I have lost one hive due to the Queen failing and this now seems to be normal as the Queens only survive one year, this has been put down to the problem with Varroa which is a vector for all the Virus's that affect bees, Israeli virus, deformed wing virus and K-wing virus also.. So, in consequence I have not treated for Varroa for 2 years and it has made very little difference to the bees. All the symptoms seem to die out as the Summer progresses, which is just the same when I treat the bees !

I'm glad it's settling down a bit. Often thought about posting some pictures but have a few problems. Don' t have a camera for one. I tend to make things, or a bit of thing, when I have time. Might set a job up and not see it again for a week. Who would be interested ? My model engineering is pretty basic common stuff, other engineering is rough and ready bodging, not up to JS's standard. A serious question- if a post is deleted would we be told and why ? I imagine the moderators are busy as it is. Ah well , I'll have to watch Bargain Hunt for pictures of 3D ladies. Just watching a Treecreeper go up a tree outside this window, amazing, there must be some engineering in there.

Put an extra little platform on the scaffolding up my chimney in the sunshine yesterday but today the wind at 1100ft is a bit too cold and strong to spend much time up there. Scaffold pipes etc are great fun, like big Meccano. I'll jus splosh some paint over the bit I've done and leave the other side for ………

Splitting this thread is a retrograde step, in my opinion. I think that the new thread will die fairly quickly. As for the complainers who don't want to read about beekeeping or astronomy – if you don't like it, don't read it. If slow downloading is your problem, that's just one of life's many frustrations, don't take it out on others.

Glad to see this thread has been resurrected.

Today gave a friend the nozzle for her NG10 blow gun to use to make decorative flowers in paint . This comes after Mick Hanbury ( skilled wood turned, demonstrator and all round good guy) showed me his cobbled together version and I thought he needs a better solution. Now done 3 for him and he's happy. Made a couple for me and now one for another friend.

Tonights mission to finish 6 over caps for her live centre to use during demo's. It's nice having skilled friends to learn from.

Today I enjoyed a day with Les Thorne , another skilled wood turner. May have to make a large ring centre to see if his pepper mills can be made another way. That's the joy of this thread, and clubs, you get inspiration to try new things.

BTW Very dis-chuffed as during the lunar eclipse we got fog! So the photo's on here have been very enjoyable.

Must get round to working out how to put photo's up! But life's so busy already.

                                    Off to the workshop.

                                    Regards to all

I did not suggest changing the title of this thread [which is fine], but only the topic under which it is listed.

Given the content; surely it should not be classified under this topic.

Cheers for Andy Smith and Steven Vine – common sense should prevail. Just leave things as they are. Don't know about other people, but my life is dogged by folks who want to "improve" things on line that work perfectly well. The Guardian cryptic crossword, aspects of the BBC news website, the Met Office weather forecasting website – don't let me go on, it I really will get an attack of the Victor Meldrews!

Had the "replacement window" man round to take my order for the final phase of new windows for the house. Remembered that one of the workshop Windows threatens to fall out if touched – so added a replacement to my order! (Hopefully in time for a cosy retreat this winter!)

Fortunately the first 1070 are solid terra firma. Froze in the wind the decided on a bonfire before it rained and of coarse was in a sheltered corner with no wind so I was roasted and kippered.

I'm surprised that the bees know whats up/down or even what season it is! We've now got the ceanothus back in full flower and the magnolia is producing buds like there's no tomorrow while the climbing rose is budding up. Not only that but the ivy is, as per normal, in flower so the bees have a real pick n mix selection if they can get out between the showers.

Perhaps that's why they are barricading themselves in.

Hello martin, Most flowers that produce nectar require 60 to 70 hours of a temperature of 22 C to make nectar, thats why you may have flowers out but no insects working on them. Perhaps you have been near the Buddlia and smelled the nectar around the bush, which would then be covered in butterflies and bees and hover flies and moths in the evening. This is the whole crux of this years low yield of honey as there has not been successive days of that temperature plus rain and wind which keeps the bees indoors. My contact with honey producers tells me it's a bad year plus all the regional reports from the local bee keepers. My harvest is usually in the 100's but this year is a maximum of 35 lb so far.
