From my reading ( Washington post)
The EPA gave two grounds to penalise VAG
First the presence of a defeat “device”. ( software/firmware?)
And secondly that such device is not declared in the build.

That qualifies as two infringments per vehicle…
Which at the quoted 37, 500$ per infringement adds up to 75, 000 $ per car…

Any way this is nothing new.
A ( as it happens vag) car manufacturer was “bragging ” the ability to detect under test conditions ( around the 1990’s).

Later two Japanese car manufacturers were arguing over how hybrid the others product was..specifically that inspection of the logs in the cars computer show that one model seemingly never used electric but was “mode locked” into petrol for all miles…never saw what happened ..but talk of withdrawal of congestion charge exemption was discussed.

The chap that owned it was an engineer and ran a lawnmower repair business, the whole lot including a bucket load of other tooling was from his estate, the lathe has been well used, but also superbly maintained, not a shred of slop in any of the gibs or handles, everything works silky smooth and the motor is sweet as sweet, just need to get it cleaned up because it's very grubby and oily, will get some pic's in my album at some point.

I can see now why people rave over these, the quality of everything is superb.

        John.

if only everything in life was a as reliable as a Volkswagen?

More annoyed with Audi drivers today… three tailgating idiots in as many miles!

I have this suspicion Audis will be recalled soon because the parking sensors are cross-wired with the cruise control causing them to hover three feet behind the car in front.

              The indicators don't work……………………………

r.e. recalls on Passats, my 2006 one had the electronic handbrake switch go intermittent. Twice the car ran away when parked, once it cost me £300 to have the boot straightened out and resprayed, cos' it ran backwards into a hedge. I took apart the switch and some of the live contacts from the actual switch were just riveted on to a little PCB, no solder!!! Going off VWs.

It's the cars in front that cause the trouble, they will not move over before the Audi gets near!

(I do not drive an Audi).

Andrew, Nice machining and a clean design. Are these for the ECU for your Burrell`s? laugh

Now there's an idea! It could go along with a new improved valve gear, since I'm not sure Stephenson's valve gear is really ideal.

The CAM programming took a bit of doing as for some reason the program took exception to some bits of the imported IGES file. I even managed to fudge the toolpaths when the designer (not me) emailed to say he'd made a mistake in the design and could I rescue the situation? To be fair he did take on board most of my suggestions for design features that make the machining easier. However, when I deliver the prototype, and the case it fits into, on Monday morning I've got a few more hints 'n' tips to potentially make manufacture a bit simpler, and cheaper.

                    Andrew

A lot of company car muppets are in Audis now, along with volvos and range rovers they are what I call a "two red flags" vehicle when I'm anywhere near one

                        I never trust an Audi

Friday between 3 to 6pm is a very high risk period to be on the roads, everyone is in a hurry, the working week is over. Bus drivers and white van man are heading for the pub etc etc

I try to stay off the roads on a Friday afternoon

Tailgating seems to work well in NASCAR, two cars close up can run faster and more economically than with a space between them. Maybe Audi should abandon endurance racing and take on the oval tracks

There must be an optimum distance for fuel economy as the car in front punches a hole in the air but you'll need an electronic aid to stop in time as at 10 feet you have 0.124 seconds to react.

There's probably been a conspiracy of silence for decades where the motor car industry is concerned because of money and jobs and taxes

I always found fuel consumption figures for my old fords to be rubbish, my VWs were crap as well, 30-35mpg was about the limit no matter what I tried and no matter what they "claimed"

My citroens on the other hand have been fabby on longer runs

Seeing the Nascar tailgating reminds me. In the 70s I used to do a lot of touring on a motorbike on the Continent, with a mate. We used to regularly cruise at 70 to 80mph. On motorway type roads, I could get up to about a foot behind Alan, and once everything settled down, close the throttle. Yes I know it was dangerous, probably anti social and branded me as some sort of thug, but no animals, humans or anything else were injured during the slipstreaming. No I won't do it again. Anyway, although it wasn't the prime objective, the lead motorcycles fuel consumption wasn't noticeably affected, whereas the trailing bike improved to about 120 miles from a tankful, compared to about 100/105.

On the "what did I do today" front, the oil tray and chip guard of my mini lathe got a second coat of Killrust gloss white epoxy enamel. As supplied they were both black, surely the most inappropriate colour. Maybe it's me.

                                  cheers

I quite agree, the forum is losing its way.

I did suggest there could be a page for off topic subjects but it fell on deaf ears, so now this thread is the unofficial off topic forum.

This page is in the 'work in progress' section, how do we find the genuine work in progress items when we have to scroll past pages of diesel emissions chat and what the dog had for tea ?

I bookmark this thread and get an email notification when posts are made to it. Some posts are very interesting and some less so but I can choose those I follow. I very rarely access posts via the sections but do look in the "LATEST POSTS" box on the right for threads that might interest me. It's in the 'Work in progress completed items / photos' section, I agree a lot of posts here are of interest but some people (myself included) are starting to think its a waste of time adding any on topic material here as it will get swamped with messages about fuel emissions or taking the dog for a walk.

A few days ago people used this page to post engineering related photos of work done, then the fuel emissions chat started and the people who want to show their work stop doing so.

If astronomy can have it's own forum why the hell can't 'off topic' ? You think I was trying to censor chat – all I'm suggesting is if you want the forum to generate more 'work in progress' items then you need to make sure it doesn't get lost in all the off topic meanderings.

If you have a project that you wish to share then simply create a thread for it in the " Work in Progress" section and that should ensure a continuity in your project's information.

The reason that " What did you do today" is so popular is, I suspect, that many folk are not presently engaged full time in a specific project but, nevertheless, have small items of interest or parts of a project to share. l find it of interest to see how others tackle problems but I would not, for example, find a thread on " How I am building my 7 1/4" Brittania " very useful – you of course might find it riveting!

I live in a very rural area with little contact with other M.E. I find the general chat and info. on this site – particularly "What did you do today" ! gives a feeling of " belonging" to the M.E. Community and provides a ready way of getting answers to any queries I may have. ( Sometimes they may even be useful!)
