Just stripped the flash steamer down after Sundays speed attempts at the last Kingsbury meeting of 2015

There was three flash steamer having a blast.

Nice to see Ian Berne old steamer going round then Bob Kirtley 121 mph and finally mine.

My first attempt was a disaster probably pump valves not seating after a few static bench fire ups it got back on form.

Second attempt with a new front wing which causes drag but stops it flipping managed 127 mph.

Tried two new propellers to replace the fast broken one and not sure if as good as original.

A not that good a third launch but speed built up then a screech as the new tube in the generator burst.

Will post a video of the three steamers running later when I have finished editing it.

A redesigned hull is required for next year to try to stop it becoming airborne and doing away with canards etc. to reduce drag.

Can we all remember that there are younger members of the ME community looking at these forums. I don't want to have to start vetting this before my 9 yr old grandson looks through it ! There's a line and I think it is about crossed.

I support Graeme here and its why I said many forums mods would have deleted the first image so we did not go down the gutter.

ME is looked at by schools students I can assure you for research of school projects its a world renown magazine….

Presumably school students would never research the website of the Louvre or the National Gallery or, heaven forbid, actually visit in person.

Today I checked the capacity of the Atkinson 3 cylinder engine and for those who are interested – the bore is 28 mm and the short stroke is 27 mm giving an induction capacity of just under 50 cc and on the long 42 mm power stroke the capacity is just over 77 cc. I think Honda use this system on some of there small cars. It would be interesting to find out what they consider is the registration capacity! ( in countries where it is applicable ). George.

Agree – a trip to the Tate would reveal more than the above. A shock to some?

Was brought a push bike to weld a broken frame seems I'm getting some beer tokens when I go to the local church tonight.

Next job to modify some new TR6 bonnet hinges so instead of removing numerous bolts and loosing bonnet settings the riveted pivot hinge is replaced with a removable pivot bolt.

In a few weeks will be watching some more high speed motorcycle etc. frolics at UK holy grail of record attempts at Elvington airfield.

Then end of October Coniston calls and hope to see a friend attempt the full size steam powered water speed record if he can sort some hopefully minor problems first.

I think that if I hear/read yet another whinge/complaint that internet content is unsuitable for CHILDREN I shall scream!!! When and if EVER junior humans contribute ANYTHING to the world in general, they will be entitled to be considered for preferential treatment.Until then it is the parent/guardian/ whatever's responsibility to monitor what the little darlings are exposed to. At 80 years of age I find it ludicrous that the delicate sensibilities of some over-indulged offspring should be the basis for what is available as CHOICE for general perusal. Roderick has it right – the world is for grown-ups … the next generation can sort things out when they reach a level of maturity sufficient to make their own decisions.

Ohhh … how nice to have a rant occasionally!!!

The big question for anything like this is where do you draw the line?

Now this website may be almost exclusively populated by middle-aged and older white men, but it is my hope that gradually we will attract a more diverse audience.

Everyone has different views on what is appropriate or not, and I don't feel very comfortable as an arbiter of taste and decency, but one of the main issues is context. You don't expect the same images on your cornflakes as in your newspaper.

It is simpler for me to just click delete on anything that might be inappropriate, rather than get into a detailed and fruitless debate of whether or not a particular posting does or does not cross a line. Given that I already spend far more time on forum issues than I should, from this post onwards I'm going to take that arbitrary approach.

Those photos we published are of inanimate objects, as are paintings and sculptures, so should not upset anyone, although when I did display at 'USAF' Mildenhall, I was asked to either put some under the counter or do some covering up can you believe. None where any 'worse' than the two I've shown.

What some folks may not realise, is that if we get flagged as a site containing profanity or nudity, we will be excluded from safe searches and possibly blocked by some ISP's filters.

The implications of this are not hard to work out.

If I may briefly drag this back to its title subject……….

Today, I finished (well nearly) the installation of the X-axis scale on the VMC mill acquired recently. It took a lot longer than I had hoped but as I was designing it "on-the -fly", I don't think it turned out too badly. Made a couple of silly errors and had to remake a couple of parts as a consequence. As it turns out, I could have done with the DRO! I've just got to radius the ends of the limit bar and then move on to the Y-axis. That looks considerably easier and I think I will use a similar arrangement to limit the travel on this one, too.

                                            x-axis scale 1

Above: General view of the installation.

Below: Poorly shot photo of the read head mounting and brackets supporting the power feed limit switch and travel stop. (No flash on the iPad.)

read head mounting and limit switch

Well since we seem to be having a forum "clean up" for fear of offending junior humans or anyone else who happens to visit from outside of the "mainly middle aged & older white male" demographic, I feel we should have a look at some of the ambiguous language used during the course of our discussions which could be taken out of context by the unwary visitor.

I suggest the following words might well cause problems and should be avoided and suitable alternatives found: Cocks, balls, screws, nuts, nipples, bushes, boring, drilling ,reaming, grinding, shafting, steaming, erecting and doubtless many more that haven't yet occurred to me. Bee keeping contributors would do well to avoid mention of honey pots and the aviators should avoid any mention of flaps.

                                                    Hi Morgans,

A nice looking belt sander. Just make sure that the ways and slides on your lathe are protected when you use it. The dust produced will contain small amounts of grinding grit which could damage sliding surfaces.

                                                    Paul.

Whilst planning a trip to the Hexam area, we happened across reference to the Subskimmer … Can anyone tell me more about this curious vessel?
