Is jpeg the best file format for that?
      Isn’t jpeg a lossy compression. .
In my experience jpeg image’s have many artifacts.
..Still the photo is better than any I’ve got..nice

So found a long reach milling cutter tonight and though it a shame not to be able to use it.

        First picture timed at 7:24pm

The generic Bligeport, like a Bridgy but on steroids.

Five tins of spinach later, head off, slotting head off ram off and 4" riser block fitted.

        This pic timed at 9:24.

Now got a genuine 511 mm from spindle nose to the bed.

That's a 600 mm rule in the pic.

Sod it off down the pub, pie and a pint calls.

Nice pic Neil. What lens did you use for this shot or was your camera attached directly to a telescope?

          Regards, Martin.

It's a Nikon 520D bridge camera, 18MP with 1000mm equivalent zoom and full manual. The high pixel count and long lens lets you get very fine detail.

It doesn't do RAW format, only jpeg but the compression is low in fine mode and I can't see any artefacts. This was at 400ASA (I meant to try 80, but forgot).

Started cannibalising a tired old bench drill for bits so I can refurb. an equally tired KENNEDY power hack saw.

Afterwards, sorted out the stuff in a toolbox from a boot last Sunday and found, along with much exotic engineering tooling, this:

                          dreamer.jpg

I've never seen one before and have no idea what it's for. The shank is approx .125" and the business part has a slight taper toward the tip. Is it a drill or a reamer – or maybe a dreamer?

                                Hi Norman,

If I sharpen up one of my 11.5mm slot drills and take off another few thou to tidy it up (assuming I can reset it accurately enough) it will make a fine paperweight.

Hi Rick The tapered device in your photo is a machine reamer to ream tapered holes for taper pins, which were used a lot to secure collars to shafts.when this country did proper engineering, the taper used to be 1 in 96 (1/8 per foot) nowadays the more common taper is 1 in a 100, Taper reamers with straight flutes were for hand reaming the holes. Hand reaming the holes was time consuming, machining them was quicker ,the cheap way nowadays is to use roll pins which work but can be bl….y useless.

G'day. Since Jason started this new 2014 thread there have been over 38,000 views.

It appears that many people are stickybeaks and want to know what the other bloke/person/lady is up to.

I must admit that this is one of my favourite threads.

Are you reading this Neil? Maybe a column in MEW called "What Are You Up To" is worth a punt.

Just so long as I get my commissionsmile p

I must confess that I have sinned today, not only did I sit in an armchair and read a book but it was about toolsdevil

I had to order some fittings from P M Research in the US and this book took my fancy, it arrived today. Its a reprint of an old tool catalogue that has everything from small hand tools to lathes, mills as well as steam engines and line shafting to power them all. As one example there is a photo of one of teh store display racks with 87 varieties of vises!!

I'm quite tempted to make a model of some of the machines it contains as it would make a nice change from the usual engines.

A couple of weeks ago I put together a "Printrbot Simple" 3D printer, but the power supply was dead on arrival.

Printrbot sent a new one, arrived in the post today, plugged it in, figured out the Z height, put in some filament, hit play, and the gosh darn thing (family forum language, that is) worked first time!

It's a calibration cube, which is "close", but I'll need to actually measure it with something other than a plastic ruler to see how it actually turned out. (my blog, with more info: **LINK** if you are interested)

Actually i think this is one of the areas where the website can complement the magazine.

I would be keen to feature photos of people's home-made tools/interesting setups that aren't a proper article but are still of interest in Scribe a Line.

Well no pictures because it wasn't interesting but yesterday the cross slide DRO on the TOS decided to stop displaying mm and started reading in latitude and longitude, thought it was looking for MH370 but seeing as the bed is only 1 metre long if it was there it would have been obvious.

Anyway the scale fitted is no longer available so a slightly longer scale was ordered but it didn't come complete with all the drilled and tapped holes needed to fit it to the cross slide.

Also seeing as it near the years end and someone who wishes to remain anonymous may [ or may not ] send me the two quid he owes me, I decided to treat the old gal to a long scale for the bed as i never fitted one when I put the DRO on about 15 years ago.

That scale went on with no problems but the cross slide scale was the usual bitch to get as much room as possible for the tailstock. Anyway job done so normal service ie 10,000 electric motors will be continued on Monday.

Just need to sort out a DRO for it now.
