Chopping out tired cement and repointing the longish gaps today. Hopefully that will thwart leakage from driving rain and gale force winds in the future. There is still silicone sealing up to a window sill to finish it off and then Thompson's water seal for good measure. Amazing stuff, I've seen water running off gravel that it has got onto.

      Building work 3, workshop 0..

Feeling righteous though as a result and I must be in for brownie points too!

Did not quite get the Printrbot Simple 3D printer together – the power supply is DOA. Oh well…

A bit more on my blog, as usual, for those interested: **LINK**

          Hi John,

Dogs can be amazing. As a boy my little brother got wasps in his hair when we were camping. My mum was trying to get them out and our dachshund took over and finished the job. He was stung all over his jaws.

Brian, dont put Thompsons waterseal below the damproof course, if you do, the damp that rises through the bricks below the damp course will not be able to evaporate. I only did the weather side of my brickwork, spray it on as it just disappears into the bricks.

              Hello Clive,

Good advice thank you, but I was aware of that risk. The job in hand was at upper level, the weather leakage was coming through the ceiling in the sideways extension below. Finishing work today as said, but the pleasant sunshine has gone and is replaced with grey cloud and a cold wind.

              Ah, well.

              Regards Brian

Ah, I only counted the wheels on the trailer. Forgot that the hitch is also described as a wheel.

Last night had another go at the drawer organizing saga that is now starting to annoy me

Later did more work on Yuri's TouchDRO box of tricks. Must say that the scales from Ketan's emporium are excellent.

Today I went off and collected my new Dividing head, cleaned her all up and fitted a four jaw self centering chuck.

                  She is Bootiful!

Any suggestions as to what I could actually use it for would be gratefully receiveddisgust

Meanwhile it makes a statement in my workshop – "looka me, I really know what I am doing!"

                  Made me smile anyway.

How about using it to create a load of swarf to scruff up your impossibly clean workshop? (That's a nice bit of kit though).

Put my 3 1/5 Netta through its 4-yearly hydraulic test – passed, then the general steam test. Not only did she pass that, but even the damned injector worked !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that's a first !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know Neil, I always wanted one. I would be very grateful to everyone if you would NOT send me the plans for one or I am likely to lose a significant part of my life

I am not surprised at the cost of some of the kits.

It would stop a thick wad of plans blowing away, I wouldn't like to drop it on my toes!

Graham, you should add a stepper motor and indexing controller like a division master or the one designed by Steve Ward (world of ward) has all the details. The latter has all the functionality of the division master but works out a lot cheaper, I have built both. Ditching the index plates and going the stepper route helps prevent making 71.5 tooth gears instead of a 72, like wot I did!!

Hi, Well today I changed these two wheels on my Bedford cement mixer ( which look like belt pulleys off some piece of farm machineary, to me) and the axle.

                                Wheels01.jpg

To these two wheels ( which came from a pair of redundent trailer suspension units) and a new fabricated axle.

                                Wheels02.jpg

There are some photos in this **LINK** of the main fabrication points, for anyone who is interested.

                                Regards Nick.

I wouldn't worry, it will make jobs that you could do with a more simple head a greater pleasure to do, and one day you will need something set out to an exact angle or a prime number of divisions!

If you're like me you will find something to do just to make use of it.

I have a fascination with Jupiter and the four Galilean moons, because they are so easy to observe (especially at the moment – go outside at 9:00 and look south and high – half decent binoculars should show you the moons). So a Jupiter system orrery might be fun and simple(ish)

Apparently the four inner moons have locked together orbital periods in the ratio 1:2:4 (something called Laplace resonance). The outer, Callisto has a period 9.4336 time that of Io. 9:85 is just over one part in a 1000 out and could be used as the basis of a gear train, say 18:68 and 20:50 which gives 1:9.44, an error of about 1/5 of an orbit over an earth year. Can anyone do better?

I made a few piston rings for the Monitor

The next part needed a dimension taken from the engine so I put it all together for the first time, its quite an impressive size when assembled.

                                      Yup.

                                      How about 9.433673469387755 ?

Which is 14:43 / 14:43 which has an error of 0.00000083 if your figure is accurate at only 4 decimal places.

If you use 3 pairs then 15:32 / 25:22 / 25:67 is exact with no reported error at 0.0000000001 places.

Two pairs of identical gears should make a design simples!

Well it's taken me about 5 minutes:

Jupiter on a fixed central spindle

Io on a outer rotating sleeve.

15:15 10:10 drive Europa on a second sleeve

15:15 10:20 drive Ganymede from that second sleeve.

14:43 14:43 drive Calisto from the first sleeve.

Best of all, the teeth numbers are such that either 1 mod gears would be a sensible size to use.

                                        Thanks John.

When I was working the weekends always seemed to be more than 5 days a part! I do get quite a few visitors to the shed but really don't mind if it helps to spread the word of model engineering and encourages others to take up our hobby.
