Only mod made to the machine is two extra M4 holes has to be drilled in the rear of the tailstock to secure the clamp block on.

      Hi John,

I think this is a very nice mod to make to the minilathe tailstock. However, on my tailstock (Sieg minilathe) the hole at the rear of the casting is only circa 10.5 mm diameter so the dummy spindle would not be able to pass into the tailstock casting. Did you machine out the end of the casting? Or have I misunderstood something?

      Mike

      Mike,

On mine which is a Sieg it has a round boss screwed to the back of the body with two M4 screws which retains the screw.

If you look carefully those screws go half into a plug that has the 10,5mm hole and half into the body.

If you gently smack a massive drift down the barrel hole this plug flies out and you are left with a 22mm bore all the way thru for the dummy barrel.

As I say this is a red Sieg machine, with camlock tailstock. I have a green Warco machine here for some work to be carried out on it I'll check the build up of that tomorrow.

      Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I will re-investigate the rear of the tailstock tomorrow.

      Mike

TNT arrived with my new toolpost grinder for my mini-lathe. Finish was garbage on the first attempt even after dressing the wheel. Suspect the wheel is el-cheapo rubbish. Will order a decent Norton wheel. The vibration from the grinder, although not much, is enough to move the cross-slide if the handle isn't held. Next job will be a cross-slide lock then, which should hopefully stiffen things up!

Scott – Even a tiny amount of vibration can give a poor finish. Try balancing the wheel someway.

Cheers Rik. Dressing it didn't do the trick so I think I'll bin it and get a decent one. It's a real scabby looking thing anyway. All moth-eaten round the edges.

Roughed out one of the Monitor's valves in a spare moment on Tuesday carbide to get most of the metal off and then finished to 3/16" with HSS

Then finished it off last night, firstly by blending the head into the shaft with a round nosed tool, then the 45deg face, skimmed the 16mm bar down to 5/8 and lastly threaded the end 2BA

While it was on the bar I lapped it into the valve seat

After sawing off the head was rounded off to give a slight crown

Then did it all again for the slightly smaller inlet valve

Jason – What sort steel did you use and what sort of heat treatment are the valves going to get?

Sadly I know the A50 very well – a superb road at at avoiding a terrible part of the M6. Usually see some nice shiny JCBs on their way to their new owners too.

Taking a picture looking backwards whilst driving on the wrong side of the road was all part of my joke, but you've ruined it now :P.

Well, not strictly today but yesterday. I built from scrap and discarded material a new stand for the parts washer and all the Ally and Brass offcuts. All of this material was rescued from the skip which did provide for some interesting measurements and fitting as there is square and round tube of varying dimensionsindecision

Ten minutes with a brush and a small pot of hammerite from the "stores" complete with shelving again from discarded material and it really looks the part. Made in two pieces so I could actually get it into the "workshop".

Now a gap in my insulation is revealed as I managed to rid myself of another cupboard. It has made the corner much brighter and gives the impression of far more space than there is.

I have to confess I am a very tidy person. I have to be as my workshop isn't really that big so I have to pack it all in there. When my missus first started to get to know me she was looking around behind doors and in cupboards for the piles of unwashed clothing and junk that she couldn't find.
She will readily admit she finds it odd that a male of the species is so tidy but I have never, ever, pretended to be "normal".
