Weller Soldering Iron tips

Can anyone tell me what is special about the Weller PT Series soldering iron tips. They do not appear to be made from copper and have a plug at the end which carries a type number

From memory they work on the curie point tocontrol temperature and are therefore magnetic.

Curie point, also called Curie Temperature, temperature at which certain magnetic materials undergo a sharp change in their magnetic properties.

Iron clad copper so they don't dissolve in the flux.

As stated above they are magnetic which holds the relay in when under temperature. On reaching the Curie point the field drops and switches the heater off.

My new Weller double iron goes to sleep when no motion is detected and the tips last for ages. The only issue I have is soldering surface mount stuff when there is very little movement going on and iron goes to sleep. All of a sudden there is no heat and you have to wave your hand around.

Hi the number indicates the heat range, 7 is common 8 iirc is hotter

If you append two zeros onto the number stamped on the end you get the nominal temperature in fahrenheit to which the temperature control operates.

So 7 – 700F = fairly normal for 60/40 solder or its more modern lead free equivalent

8 = 800F = blooming hot
