Just taken delivery of a new Weiss WBL290F lathe from Amadeal (ill be posting a full review thread later in the month once I get it all setup). Before I move it through my house into final position I just wanted to turn it on and test its all working.

Problem at the moment is its not turning on….I have released the E-Stop and pressing the green power button does nothing. Ive checked both fuses (one in the panel and one in the plug) and both are working.

Just wanted to ask if I’m missing something obvious here before I start going down the rabbit hole opening it up and checking connections in the control board.

I tried using the search function on the forum but its incredibly slow at the moment.

Worth checking that the safety cut outs are making contact. The chuck guard needs to be down and the gear cover on the left of the headstock needs to be in place. On the later it is not unknown for the tab that contacts the microswitch to move a bit in transport.

Before you go poking about with the electrics contact Hugh at Amadeal and talk it through with him.

Wot Jason said.   My WM280 refused to start after two years. Chuck guard switch was loose , easy fix.

But don’t DIY without talking to Amadeal.  A new lathe is their problem, unless you fog responsibility by messing with it.

Thankyou guys, spoke to Luke @ Amadeal (always very quick to respond and helpful) and asked I check the chuck guard. I also checked the safety switch on the gear door and noticed it was misaligned causing it to not engage with the switch. That fixed the power issue.

So I turned it on for the first time, put it on forward, turned the speed pot, and heard a loud bang. I couldn’t see any smoke nor a strong smell of burnt components. Not sure what it was but now the motor does not turn but the LCD screen still turns on which is probably telling me the PCB board is still working and perhaps something has popped in the motor. The report does show that all electrical aspects have been checked on the lathe so this was very disappointing. Awaiting to hear from Amadeal tomorrow, hopefully with some advice.

I used to believe that all these machines were “Checked by our own Engineers” before being sold to customers.

              Has that changed ???

You are thinking of another Company that used to say that.

                  I believe they still do.

How disappointing and annoying.  But this is hassle rather than a crisis.   Talk to Amadeal and let them sort it out.   A bang is worrying, so the lathe might have to be replaced.  More likely to be the electronics or a loose wire flapping about inside than the motor.  But we don’t know.

Please report how Amadeal respond.  Few complaints about them, if any, but the real test of a company is how effectively they deal with problems like this.

One of the way hobby machine costs are kept low is to minimise inspection, which means the odd lemon can reach the customer.  And a full-factory inspection won’t catch damage in transit!   Hobby customers are protected financially, not by an expensive inspection process, which no-one is prepared to pay for!   If a dud arrives work with the supplier. Don’t fix a new faulty machine yourself unless the problem is obviously trivial.

Amadeal have been great so far. Always quick to respond. I’ve sent them some images of the board, I can’t see any damage to the board but they reckon its probably something wrong with it so will send me out a new one. Unfortunately, they don’t have stock so I’m going to have to wait for it to be shipped from China (I guess that’s going to take a few weeks at least).

Currently, Ive got the lathe sitting in my living room because I don’t want to go through all the hassle of moving it through the house out into the shed if it’s not working and needs to be returned.

Ideally, I like to get an accurate diagnosis of the issue because I’m worried I’ll install the new board, turn it on and pop goes another board…..

Not unknown for a wire to become loose during transit and short to earth.

It took me a whole day to get it moved into my house, i’d rather not go through it again twice (getting it back out to be picked up and then getting a new one back in). Also they informed me this was the last 290 from the current batch so have to wait until later in year for new one. Hopefully we can fix this issue

Ill have a look around but I couldn’t see any loose wiring in the control board when I sent them the pictures.

Update – Amadeal were great in fixing the issue, very happy with the customer service, they received the part from China and then sent out next day to me. It was indeed the board that had blown so lathe is now running fine.
