I have noticed that when I go to login to my account the black banner is misplaced and covers my login details. It is the bar that has the menu items "Home, Features, Workshop, Events, Forums & etc". My browser is Firefox 38.0 on a Linux Mint 17.1 64 bit machine.

I have a screenshot on my computer but when I go to add it I am told that I must "Browse your albums to find an image". It adds that no albums are found. No idea what that is all about but unable to include the screenshot as a result.

I'm not a computer expert but try clearing the cache. I get similar problems with another site.

Well, at last here is a screen shot of my login page showing how the black banner obscures my login details

              me_forum_login_screen.jpg

I have also noticed that once I have logged in some of the bullet points next to the graphic of the Model Engineer magazine are obscured as well.

Sorry, that last post went up before I had added the second picture or edited my text. Here is the 'once logged in' page with the ME bullet points obscured.

Just as confirmation here is a screen shot of the page I see once I log out.

                    BigAl,

My home `puters OK – laptop + desktop but my Mob sometimes gets the affliction shown in your first piccy. Its a Samsung obviously on Android + G4 but this is a different OS to your `puter, which suggests it could be a fault with MTM`s system.

                    Regards,

                    John

I can't replicate that here, using firefox 39.

It looks like it is loading an 'invisible' object that is pushing the main header across to the left.

Try clearing your cache as there were a few formatting issues last friday that have been corrected.

My current FF version is 42.0. The problem has existed for several earlier versions, and on all 3 of my desktop machines. On the current machine there is no cache stored as it is a completely new installation.

                        Cheers

I also have FF42 and do not have the problem.

Are you running an ad blocker or something?

What it looks like, is that the my friends, email news and latest forum posts modules are missing. The adverts then pop up at the top.

As I said, it is a persistent problem across, what is now quite a few different versions of FF and on three different computers, three 32 bit and one 64 bit. The latter is a totally fresh install that had nothing additional added and with no previous profiles set up and no cache. This site was the first one I went to once installation was completed. As a part time webmaster I have a sneaky feeling it something to do with the CSS or scripts that are running on the site but do not know anywhere enough to be able to say positively where the problem lies. It is strange that it does not seem to manifest itself on any one else’s machines; this rather defeats my surmise that there is a problem with the site CSS or scripting.

                            I'm stumped.

                            Cheers

No, can't say I have ever looked at at it before now. Actually I had never even heard of it. I followed your link and the black banner appeared just the same, right across the log in form.

I will ask Katy the web designer to take a look.

BigAl could you email me on neil.wyatt@mytimemedia.com as Katy will need to get in touch to know your exact setup?

I don't think it is an adblocker causing it a there aren't any ads missing from the screenshot, however it does appear to be something that is very dependent on the local setup as most users don't seem to have this problem.

For now, final suggestion is go to teh firefox menu, select help–> restart with addons disabled and see if this make a difference.

I get it as well on Firefox – but then I browse with javascript definitely off, many wellknown bad/advertising sources blocked via by Hosts file + adblocker, noredirect add-on to avoid the hidden trackers added to all pages by MyMedia and for good measure as I prefer an old fashioned rather than Jack + Jill colouring I set ignore author CSS – the old-style mainly text pages both load very very much faster but are easier on the eye and much easier to extract info from rather than a collection of blinking coloured tiles

I noted this problem some years ago.

                                          Its still present.

But I seem to not be bothered by it any longer.

This sort of thing happens on Linux sometimes. Could just be that your java runtime isn't up to date or has been corrupted some how. Some disto's come with the open source versions. Eventually it generally becomes to dated to work on some sites.

Of late I have been using Chromium (Not Google Chrome). It should be available on your distro.

The other possibility is that some one has been tampering with the forum software. Generally it's only checked against windows and often bad practices cause problems with othe OS's and sometimes older versions of windows. Newer ones too.

I'm using LinuxMint 71.3 with Firefox 42.0. The black bar is OK, but with an open thread, the thread title line in green at the top of the thread is slightly too high, and overwrites the line saying 'All Forum Topics….'

Its always been like that with Linux, both Mint and Ubuntu, and since any changes to the website will never happen, I just live it, like Jason Udall.

I am also running Adblock2, Privacy Badger and a video download addon, but even without these, the problem is still there, so I also think it is a site problem. I don't think it is anything to do with Java, or a corruption thereof, partly because I have always seen the problem since I started looking at the ME site, and also because in recent days I have updated four computers from older versions of LinuxMInt or Ubuntu to the latest Beta release of LinuxMint (17.3) – a laptop, and three desktop machines, all with different specifications for CPU, memory etc. The problem was present on all the machines before update, and is still present after update. The only guess I can offer is that Firefox on Linux handles its screen displays in a different manner to Windoze/IE etc, and that possibly some parameter governing text size or location is either undefined or incorrectly defined.

(Before someone flames me by saying Linuxmint 17.3 is a Beta, still under development, so it can easily be blamed on that, I will point out that exactly the same problem existed in all releases of LinuxMint 15, 16 and 17, the long term support version).

I am using Firefox 42.0 and Windows 7 Professional and I'm not getting the effect you are experiencing on the login page but get something similar on others. I don't have a solution, but a workaround would be to use a password manager (E.G. Lastpass) and, when you've filled in the form once, the password manager can be configured to enter your details for you automatically and all you have to do is click on the "Login" button, which it appears you can access easily. Alternatively just tick the "remember me" box. That should have the same effect, if you don't trust password managers.

Most layout problems are caused by adblockers.

Naturally as this website is paid for by advertising, there isn't much incentive for the site to be re-written to accommodate adblockers…

actually I’ve never found adblockers to cause much problem – the usual one is undue emphasis on Javascript(not Java which I hope no site now uses on web facing software – quite different from Javascript tho names are very confusing)

Javascript can be likened to giving the car keys to any passer-by – it’s the mechanism by which all the tracking of you by advertisers rely on – as do all those ‘innocent looking’ farcebook and twatter pictograms – each linked to your IP address to indicate to them that you have an interest in ME and would appreciate a deluge of relevant adverts
