Very true Kwil but, with regard to Model Engineering, is anything we make of any use?
From the simplest oscillating engine to the latest masterpiece from Cherry Hill they may be satisfying for the constructor and amazing to others but surely wholly unnecessary ? You may say that the model loco or traction engine is “useful” in providing rides for kiddies and raising revenue for a club but a “cheap” battery powered unit ( suitably disguised) would no doubt do pretty much as well. The pleasure is in the making. In the dim and distant past , for my 21st birthday, I was given an Omega wrist watch. Still lovely today – accurate, quiet and stylish. Last time I had it serviced I seem to recall it cost me around £150 – that would buy a lot of throw aways ! I don’t wear it often and, as you say, have a cheaper ( and maybe more accurate!) watch for everyday use. The mechanical watch however still gives me pleasure after all these years.
Cheap can be good but seldom satisfying!
Cheers
