Warco Universal Cutter Grinder

I recently bought a new Warco Universal Tool & Cutter Grinder, which is a Chinese Deckel Clone, but when it arrived it doesn't have the red dot on the head to use to align the indexing tab at the front of the head. The instructions (for what they're worth) insist that it is there and it is mentioned extensively, and to my mind I can't see an alternative way of setting this up. I wondered if anyone has any suggestions as to how to set up this machine in the absence of this particularly important mark.

Indexing Problem

I used Deckel and Alexander machines for 50 years at work. Both had the red dot as a setting aid for single lip cutters. Reality is that after a while I just set by eye with the barrel graduations at zero. Lovely machines to operate and can do much more than you think with a bit of thought, wish I had one at home now.

The red dot is only there to give a visual indication that the stop/indexing plunger is in the correct section between 2 stop pins giving 180 degrees of spindle rotation One can get around not having one by engaging the plunger and rotating the spindle and seeing wether you get 180degrees if you don’t just rotate the spindle with the pin pulled back slightly and “feel” the stop pins on the spindle.
The dot is merely a dab of paint so it could be added with a bit of dismantling. Stupid question but is the little window present? Also the dot might be obscured with grease/dirt.

Im lucky enough to have 2 Alexander versions and they are fantastic machines with a bit of thought. Stefan gottaswinter on YouTube is quite a guru on them.

Thanks- there’s no window, but there is 1 section of the head that moves from 150-330 degrees between the pins giving 180 degree movement.

Oh, trust me, I have. They do 2 cutter grinders, neither of which feature the all important red dot. The machine is being collected next week unless I can find a work-around – I'm happy enough to drill a small hole in the ring and paint it red, I only really need to know exactly where to put it.

the index dot indicates that the indexing ring is 90 degrees into the 180 degree travel.

That gives you the correct position when you line the flat of the d bit up with the pull out blade to rotate the back edge for grinding the relief.

There is probably an index notch that corresponds which you can use to lock it whilst making the marker.

Have you dismantled the spindle? It possible the index ring has a place for the dot on it, but the hole in the housing to view it hasn't been drilled.

That's exactly the information I was looking for – Thank you so much! I'll now sit down and work out where that is relative to the 180degree travel, then drill & mark the position. If it were possible, I'd happily have your babies!

Jim,

IIRC (it’s been a while) the spindle comes to pieces quite easily. I would take the back off and have a look at the index ring. It’s a fairly chunky piece and there is a good chance the dot mark place is on it.
It doesn’t actually matter where your mark is, as long as the index ring is halfway through the travel.
I returned the Chinese one I had as it arrived damaged, then I lucked into an actual S0 with loads of collets for not much more.

The Deckel head is the same, but IIRC there were detail differences.
