Hi, my old maintenance job was with a large industrial company that had various sites throughout Britain. and some in other countries, and they also had British Standard recognition, myself and a workmate had to go to one of their sites once a little south of London, to take out a small plant, for bringing back and reinstalling it inside a new building on our own site, and in their workshop was a Myford lathe, I can’t remember which model it was though, but it was bench mounted. Now although they didn’t have heavy plant at that site, it was still an industrial one, so yes some big industrial industries did use Myford lathes.

      Regards Nick.

My little Raglan mill came from a tool room.  Only used by the tool room machinists for making prototype parts, before the main machine shop took over for manufacture.

I’ve seen a couple of Raglan lathes in schools, but no myfords. Mostly better, more modern lathes (likely more safety features, trips, etc).

Raglan were no more, after about ‘72.

I’ve also seen at least one Raglan lathe that was well used – because the bed was worn over a short length – indicating likely repetitive operation over several/many years.  It takes a lot of use, to wear the ways on those lathes.

The machine shop where I worked had – err – very large lathes, but the instrument guys had a little Boxford.  There was no chance of prizing it out of their grasp!

As predicted Nigel goes straight into attack mode! Accusing me of making “verbose opinionated assaults” is playground stuff. A straight fail in formal debate.

            Sigh.

            Here we go again.

I will take your unwillingness (or, more likely, inabilty) to quote reputable sources to back up the assertion you made as being an admission that it is just your opinion and not a “hard fact” as you portrayed it. This opinion does not seem to be based on the experience having owned or operated the products of either company. Fair enough.

The rest is a just diversionary tactic to deflect attention away from your failing to address the point I raised. Nice try, but I’m not playing.

Now would appear to be a good time for you to consider employing the late Denis Healey’s “First Law of Holes”. And I will no deploy (in a virtual sense since the forum change-over) the “Ignore Member” button in your case.

Hope you have good Christmas, Dave, and wishing you a speedy return to good health so that you may enjoy time in your workshop. Over and out.

            Nigel B.
