      Hi there.

Does anyone know of someone who has completed a working model of a VW Flat 4 air cooled motor?

      Cheers me dears.

Perhaps Jason B has answered, but all I see is a blank box.

A Brian Perkins (the Brian Perkins?) wrote up his BP 75 model in Strictly IC magazine, years ago. It was based on the VW flat 4, was 75cc and he flew it in a large scale model Colibri. Impressive. 'Fraid I can't provide more info. – my copies of SIC are in a box, somewhere…

You'll get a disappointing few hits from an internet search, but there's a little to whet the appetite out there…

So your internet search did not show that Youtube video of a running model VW engine?

Still of the engine and it's builder

I was assuming you meant a beetle engine as there is also the aero engine, This is Ed Winn's one which I have seen in the flesh as I also exhibited at the same event this photo was taken at

Same engine featured in ME special

As a PPL and later a CPL/FI, I have had some experience of VW aero engines. Basically a Beetle motor with dual ignition and two spark plugs per cylinder. There are also some chaps who have successfully 'halved' the VW flat 4 and used the resulting 2 cylinder motor in very lightweight aircraft.

We have had a few Beetles in the family, a 1300, 1600GT and a 1303 super beetle, and a bay window camper, so that along with John Muirs excellent book for the 'How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, A Manual of Step By Step Procedures For The Compleat Idiot', means I have a soft spot for this engine.

I always remember reading the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comics, and the 3 hippies in their camper speeding away from the Narcs with the sound of 'Vroooooom-tweetle, Rooooaaaaarrrr-tweetle'

The most perfect literary representation of a VW flat four I've ever heard!

There is a model design of a flat four by Len Mason of "Mastive", there is one chap on MEM who is carving one out of solid aluminium block, I think at one time castings were available for the crankcase halves.

Drawings and details of the version built by Brian Perkins were serialised in Model Engineer, starting 4th February 2005 and ending 27th May (alternate issues, as per usual).

Canadian, Herb Jordan built both a flat 4 and the famous flat12 (917).**LINK**

Amazing pieces of model engineering, beautiful just to look at let alone run, full of admiration for people with that level of skill, way beyond me.

p.s. I remember some years back seeing a video of a guy who had built and run a model Merlin engine, I could hardly believe it at the time but he did it.

JasonB – thanks for the pointer to the video. I hadn't found it because I searched specifically for 'Brian Perkins VW'. For some reason, it's the only thing I can remember that hasn't shown up correctly in this forum. Presumably it's because I run Firefox (on Linux) with cookies, scripts, trackers and ads controlled tightly. It's surprising how most sites still work OK with loads of scripts disabled. They must be trying to do something – but what?

I think they would say make an ROI
