I am building the Vulcan Beam engine described by E T Westbury in Model Engineer Issue 2787, 2789, 2791, 2793, 2795, 2797, 2799 and 2801. I have the castings for the standards and the flywheel, but having to fabricate or mill from solid stock the remaining parts.

I would welcome comments from other builders of this engine and especially any variations from the drawings published in ME

Just found this video on You Tube of Alf Case’s model in action at the Harrogate model exhibition in 2009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2q7C_t_cyfM

          Hi Bob,

I built a Vulcan beam engine entirely from fabrications, including the flywheel and “A” frames.  The engine was awarded a bronze medal at the 2002 ME Exhibition and a photograph appeared on the cover of ME number 4190, 6th March 2003.  The only modifications that I made to the design was to correct a couple of dimensional errors on the drawings published in the magazine.  I only run the engine on compressed air because I fabricated the cyilnder assembly from steel and I am concerned that this will rust if the engiine is steamed.

Hi Norman, I'm glad to find a constructor of the Vulcan Beam Engine. Is there any way to find the original article in M.E.? I know it was an Edger Westbury article in the M.E. volume111, 1954 and volume112, 1955. My brother has the castings but needs the instructions to complete the model. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for any assistance Craig Morley

Should be able to pick them up on e-bay, I also think one of the Best of ME had the whole series in it which would just be one mag to buy.

EDIT Best of Model Engineer Vol II has the build article and drawings in it, see the current "Drawing Anomilies" thread for some errors

                Hi Bob,

You could try Brunell Steam Models. He lists the construction notes, (photocopies of the original ME articles) for about £6.00. Just make sure you pay by Paypal so you can get a refund if the goods don't arrive! I recently acquired a set of Vulcan castings from Graham which included the construction notes.

                Regards, Martin.

There is another thread on the Vulcan under drawing anomalies

Thanks for the reply Jason. The only problem is that I have checked any and all threads relating to "Drawing Anomalies" and other errors and such.and I haven't come across any info. I will check E-bay, etc.

                    cheers Craig

Craig, I sent you a PM about the Vulcan articles in Model Engineer – did you get it? It was the first time I've used it so not sure if it worked…

                      Steve
