Hi Nigel B, unless you are kidding us, a couple or so of petrol stations ran out of fuel and the blame was focused on the shortage of HGV drivers, but then on TV the most senseless statement of "there is no need to panic buy" was repeated quite often, what happened next? well the majority of people in the country did just that and emptied virtually all the filling stations to a point where emergency services and people who worked in essential places couldn't get fuel to get to their work place. Hence Dave's photo.

        Regards Nick.

Here you go, one of the better battery repair videos I've seen.

About $20,000 for a replacement battery

Hi Nigel B, unless you are kidding us,

Not kidding, Nicholas. I was out of the country late September (touring in Germany) but had no problems getting fuel on the way out, while I was over there or when I returned. I don't bother with "news" when away, so was unaware of such problems, which must have blown over by the time I returned.

              Nigel B.

They'll sort these things out pretty fast as they arise, hundreds of stranded wives and daughters is bad for business

EVs used to be mobile firelighters and they fixed that one quite quickly

It' a bit like going back to the 1960's. Buy a new car. Example a Ford Anglia. It would last around 10 yrs before falling apart with rust.

Buy a New EV. 10yrs & it is either scrap or worthless & sold as spares or repair.

Only difference being the purchase cost is much, much higher.

                  Steve.

                    A few points of order.
In the case of a regional blackout then local petrol stations can't pump unless they have their own generator – so you still can't fill an ICE.
Having your own gas or oil storage tank won't run the central heating without electricity.
It's all about contingencies – whether it’s worthwhile owing a generator or owning a domestic storage battery or having alternative fuel you can use.
Less well off folk in more populous areas will get stuck when the lights go out.
Out here in rural forgotten-land most folk still have a wood burner and the more remote places (such as my own) have a genny. – which I run up to check every few weeks but we haven't' had to use for domestic power for a long time. We also have a couple of camping gas rings to complement the wood burner should the need arise.
I keep trying to get solar panels and a battery installed but while a few co's have come to see – none of them ever call back – they can't be bothered to work in the wilds.

Back to Volkswagen, I recently read that they are in debt to the tune of a $192 Billion. More than South Africa it said,

Sounds like a good argument to buy a showmans engine. Steam heating for the house, has it's own generator and available for transport when needed. Drawback is cost. Our mechanical workshop's apprentice's family just bought one for a touch over a million quid. Looks lovely though.

                        regards Martin

The charming Dr Diess used to do a midnight patrol of the factory, we went straight out on a breakdown at 8pm the start of shift and just before his visit to our office at 00:30 we had grabbed a cup of tea, on our desks were our payslips which promoted some discussion as it had a bonus payment or some variation. His report said he found the Control engineers were drinking tea and studying their payslips, somewhat unfair we felt as we had been flat out fixing stuff since the start of shift. He did row back somewhat as the Union took him to task on some of his other snapshot criticisms which were unfair.
