I have an Alford and Adler swivel pin drawing from 1924 which in the material specification box it shows “ubas” (the “u” could possibly be an “a&rdquo.
In the main body of the drawing it says “Case harden to usual C.H.S. specification”
I have a good idea what steel to use for the application but I would love to know what “ubas” actually stands for.

Has anybody out there got the answer?

Googleing ubas brings up a referenace to an artcle in the New York Times from January 1912 which describes its production (sort off) No metalurgical analasis though.

My guess is Universal Bright Alloy Steel as opposed to Universal Bright Mild Steel.

The term is still used and leads to low/medium carbon steels like En 16T at 0.35% C., tough and case hardenable so would probably suit your application.

Hi, bit late with this only just seen it , Flather bright steels ltd, patented a steel for rear axles particularily on heavy goods vehicles they called it UBAS unbreakable back axle steel , rear axles on any vehicle years ago was very temperamental, let the clutch out on your motor bit sharp and "click" that was the shaft gone , drive shafts on vehicles never break now but that wasn't the case years ago, Flathers was taken over by british bright bar ltd and moved from sheffield to tipton early 1980's Malc.
