The VFD was mounted at around 4ft high and separated from the belt by a 3ft walkway, however the location IMO needed IP66 equipment which of course that VFD isn't, low pressure water used for clean down of the belt at the end of each of 3 8hr shifts.

Sounds like that drive had a charmed life if a wash down was going on in the vicinity, I found a manual on line for it and is says the drive IP rating is IP40 less than 1mm particles and zero protection from liquid, the cleaning crew must have been a sensible one, I am sure it would have had a good hosing in our plant just for the hell of it. A nice stainless steel or even plastic enclosure would have kept it nice and safe. The most hostile environment I ever came across was the salt spray booth for corrosion testing, the plant room with the electrode boiler providing the steam for the salty steam spray was a total nightmare, everything steel just crumbled, plastic was the only thing that was impervious to the super corrosive atmosphere and we were outside the booth that was supposed to be getting the salty steam. Just realised that was 1974 when I was an apprentice, seems like yesterday.

Please can everyone try to keep things polite.

FWIW my Imo Jaguar Cub (one of the most frequently sold to hobbysists) has built in EMC and so do many others. To comply the supplied grounding flange should be used to ensue the wiring is grounded correctly.

          Hi Neil

When you purchased your VFD you had the choice of filter fitted or none fitted unless the spec has changed.

I believe I did mention that fact re built in EMC filtering included on some low cost units and also just because you are perhaps paying 3 times as much does not guarantee a filter will be fitted, they are listed as an extra cost item.

Ref the grounding, it can vary between makes, some say the screen should be connected to earth at the VFD only and others may state at both ends, best to follow the makers suggestion.

Son needs a VFD for a 3 phase motor to use on his Myford 7.

Totally confused by all the different ones so any advice as to most reliable make appreciated please.

            Thanks

My lathe a Warco wm280v came with a Delta vfd which has served me well. I have recenty built a 2×72 belt grinder and used an Invertek vfd, this is more expensive than the generic cheap chinese vfds but it appears better built. You might want to build an enclosure for it to limit prevent dust and swarf damaging it.

You can get Ip55 rated vfds but it they are expensive. I opted to seal mine inside a pelicase and duct it's heatsink out. A belt grinder generates a fair amount of metallic dust so it makes sense to protect your vfd, on a lathe placing it away from direct path of oil and swarf should be enough.

            Hope this helps.

The vfd as purchased: INVERTEK Optidrive E2 ODE-2-22150-1KB42 1.5kw

            Enclosure in sealed pelicase.

Heat sink isolated from the case and cooled with external air.

Robert, I have a problem with my milling m/c DRO in that when I switch it on it obliterates radio 2 so I'm guessing it's giving off EMC. Is there a simple filter I can fit to overcome this I guess complicated problem? I also see spectrum analysers are not too expensive, having said that maybe I was too hasty about the cost.

Many thanks to Robert Atkinson 2 who generously supplied advice & then a clip on ferrite which was attached to my DRO power lead to overcome the radio interference!

Apologies if it seems nit-picky but the cable grommet is missing from the entry hole in the VFD box.

Grommets protect cables from the metal edge which is liable to chafe through the insulation. How long it takes to cause magic smoke depends on the weight of the cable and how much it moves and vibrates. Fans, motors, transformers, chokes, contactors, motors and machines are all rich sources of vibration.

"you will see the test cables coming out of the gland plate, pity I didn't fit at least a grommet."
