I know this isn't a resource in the traditional sense but I feel certain at least one person on this forum could benefit.

This website is apparently a Police supported initiative to have a database of serial numbers of kit to allow it to be returned to owners if found. I know people might cry Big Brother but I think its a genuinely good idea and quite useful. Intended originally for Bicycles (all mine are on there) it gives you a simple and free way of registering your serial numbers of items, including photos, descriptions or whatever. You can put as much or as little info as you want, and you can purchase stickers with bar coded numbers on should you wish to stick to your items to speed up the return of your item (making the huge assumption the tea-leaf doesn't find the tag themselves and remove it). Apparently the certificate you can download for each item also speeds up the process of claiming on your insurance.
I have no connection to the site, no commercial interest or similar, I just thought it might be useful to register your lathes or whatever so you have a fighting chance of getting it back if stolen and recovered. I hope it helps someone.
