vertical slide mod

Good evening everyone. I would just like to know if it would be better to modify my myford vertical slide swivel base bracket to 4 fixing bolts and how, as I have read on line that the single bolt types are not very secure ? all advice will be welcome ( I have only just bought this vertical slide second hand single bolt type ) Thanks .

I also have the single bolt type and confirm that it is not very secure having slipped on occasion. Presumably the two bolt type is an improvement (why else change it) but I don't, at the moment, have an explanation of why it should hold better given equal clamping forces. Perhaps the smaller diameter of the two bolts allows higher clamping loads under normal spannering conditions. Any other ideas ?

Best to use the slide as is to find out if there is a problem with loss of location, all will depend on the depth and width of cut you try to take, bigger the cut greater the chance of the slide moving.

Taking plenty of light cuts will get the job done but of course it takes longer.

Round piece of Matt finish, not glazed, paper cut to size, interposed between the two mating surfaces should help prevent slippage, in addition to the light cuts mentioned above.

I imagine that Myford re-engineered the clamping to the two bolt style because the one bolt method had proved to be unsatisfactory on occasion. I think it is probably possible to replace the one bolt clamp with the two bolt version.

The holes in my chinese vertical slide didn't match my S7 cross-slots anyway, so I had to make an adaptor plate for it – but even so, I think it's good idea to have a sub-plate in-between to spread the load and make sure I'm not going to damage the T-slots by over tightening a single T-nut etc.

You can use this plate to also mount other things that otherwise wouldn't match the Myford cross-slide slots (like vices, angle-plates etc)

The single bolt system twists too easily under load so they started the two bolt system

Shouldnt be too hard to convert it to the two bolt system. The base would just be a matter of drillng the holes and buying an extra T bolt, and making a flat washer to replace the large conical washer on the single bolt unit. The swivel on the slide would need two holes drilling and tapping into the slide body and the same kind of flat washer making to replace the conical washer.

Or if you are not planning on doing advanced gear cutting with a dividing head etc, sell it and buy a much more rigid fixed vertical slide. The pivoted one even with two bolts is much more prone to flexing under load.

I've found the 2-stud version quite satisfactory on my Warco. I'd be more worried about the stability of the crossslide than the pivot, especially a narrow slide like a Myford.

Hopper – I wish I could find a dividing head tiny enough to fit on a Myford vertical slide!
