I cant see how to create a photo album so I cant post pix

I have an ML7 and it appears to have a sML7 cross slide with a 1 7/8" hole to accept the top slide

my Myford mill has a 1 1/4" clamp collar to be secured as per the top slide but its much too small and I would have to make a collar ring to take up the slack, or esle make a complet new clamp ring to suit

        does anyone have any ideas?

pls how do I post pix?

              brian jones 11:

It looks as though the shaped pads which are meant to bear on the dovetail are missing?

My query was based on the idea that your cross slide is the Myford Super 7 style. The pads are handed and shaped to correspond with the dovetail on the underside of the topslide base. Here is an extract from the parts list showing the two thrust pads numbered 39 and 63 (they are different and must not be swapped):

Yes thats correct but here where it goes awry.

the circular spigot on the top slide that mates with the hole in the cross slide is 1.75" dia and it a snug fit. the dowel pads 39 and 63 mate with the chamfer spigot on the underside of the top slide – see my pix

the same arrangement applies to the mill BUT its is much smaller at 1.25" dia, so a collar and much longer screws would be required

better still a complet new spigot assy needed see pix above

                    unless i am missing something

I follow you and agree that a new dovetail spigot to the vertical slide would be much preferable. I'm not clear whether the existing is integral but hope you can successfully turn up and fit a new one to fit the cross slide.

My point was that I couldn't see the pads in your photos (and was puzzled by lock nuts on the screws).

The standard Myford slide is retained via the cross slide tee slots, of course, and this might be an alternative to consider. In either case, it looks as though some work is required.

The chamfer spigot comes apart from the mill and just need to be bigger dia to 1.75", perhaps i can silver solder a collar onto it made from a piece of 2" round bar

Ill do a drg and post

I've just measured my single T-nut milling slide and its 1-5/8 with no groove

There were also 2x t-nut versions made later

so it looks like they were not designed that way, although a swap over mod is always an option

The circular spigot was available as a separate part, I have one which I use as a dust cap when the compound is taken off.

Andy1 thnx 10^6 your tip got me out of my loop and I created a single tee slot post to clamp the mill. it works a treat I will post some pix as soon as I have got the parts 3/8 unf HT bolt and auto car wheel long nut. Of course I could cheat and use an M8 coach bolt but its not HT and might spring under pressure

but for <£5 it looks good

Well I thought I should report a success following advice from members here, which is why I came here frist place, cos I was stuck

I got a 7/16" ht bolt x 50mm, I had to thin down the head to fit the cross slide slot – imagine my surprise when I found how easy that was with a carbide tip (otherwise a laborious grind for half hour)

then fitted wit a neat long nut from an auto car wheel £4 and all done, holds fully firm on the cross slide

I was going to sell it on but having seen vids of the vertical mill in action , its not so mickey mouse as I thought (and these are not cheap £100+

so thnx 10^6 – thats what this board is aboutlaugh
