I bought this a couple of years ago with a 1920s Stuart 504 boiler. I always thought it was an old type No7 but I've recently measured the height at 9" not including the fixing bolts. Just wondering if anyone has any idea what it could be? I think it's too tall for a 7 and not tall enough for a No.4.

Too small for a No.1 as well.

                the 1 should be 12"

                the 4 should be 10"

and the 7 or 7a from memory should be 7 1/2"

                        What's the bore and stroke?

Not checked the stroke but it's 1" bore

If not Stuart, maybe reeves. Any idea if they had a model that size in the 1920s or 30s?

Bolton No3 is right bore and stroke and has the turned support vertical as per your photo the No7 had it slanted but the current standard is more angular and not sure if it has changed over time

The standards for the Stuart 7 changed in the 1930s, and they made it the 7a.

I can`t seem to find any images for the Bolton No.3 on google, but I`d be interested if somebody could upload one.

I`ve just done a materials test with a magnet, and it turns out the very bottom base is actually wood!!! Very well done though otherwise I would have spotted it sooner. The proportions are right compared to my Stuart 10, so the 9" height is still a mystery, Unless it is a Bolton.

No I could not find a better image when searching yesterday, this is the catalogue. As I say not sure if the standard has changed over time but others have as the No16 drawings that I have don't look like the one in the catalogue being single standard and trurned leg.

Not the easiest to navigate but this site has some good stuff about how the various Stuart engine shave changed, click the 3 green bars top right of homepage.

This is the photo Bill has forwarded.

Unlike the catalogue it has the pair of standards though they are curved more. Add on th eheight of the box bed and its about the right height.

A few of their models look a lot like Stuart. I`ll take some better photos and maybe get in touch with Bolton models.

Just measured my flywheel and its 4 1/2".

Very nice engine no matter what, although all of my collection are Stuarts.
