I have completed my version of the Vega twin, designed by Parker. The drawings was published in Model Engineer during the 80's. The link below takes you to a video on YouTube showing my engine. Initially, I had much concern whether I should tackle this engine. However, because there was a real prospect of using this engine in a model aircraft, I embarked on the project. There was no real problems with the machining of the parts. I just found that some design features can be improved upon and so also some suggested construction procedures and methods. The engine runs well conventional glow fuel prompting me to consider mounting this engine on a model aircraft.

                        Nice work Cor,

I have made a few engines over the years and promise myself to make some more in the future once I get my two motorcycle projects and my Don Young Doncaster out of the way. I liked the Vega design but I thought it a little small for my liking, there is a nice 15CC Vee Twin design that I believe came from Les Chenery that looks really nice and runs well too.

I don't want to dampen your spirits because I know how good it feels to get an engine to run for the first time but I learnt the hard way not to run an aero engine while standing anywhere but directly behind it. The first time was a really bad one and nearly cost me my thumb when I started my 200CC flat twin and had forgotten to tether the test stand. Trying to stop a 36" prop with your hand, even at tick over speeds is painful to say the least.

The last time was Several years later when I was starting my 27 CC 4 stroke C.I Engine and trying to adjust the carburettor from a similar position as yourself which resulted in a visit to A & E for a few stitches.

It hasn't put me off but i will only be operating them from behind in future.

As has been already stated, a great piece of model engineering.

Question is, what's next on your drawing board?

Hello everyone, I am looking for some help, I am at the moment "trying" to construct a Vega V twin, my main problem is the best way to "carve" the external crankcase. If anyone can offer help advice, photo's etc I would be very grateful.

Regards to all at this difficult time, so stay save.

I would rough out a block 1mm oversize in all dims then set up in the 4-jaw to hollow out the case, bore the bearing and crankshaft hole all in one go so they are concentric.

Then reverse in the 4-jaw and set the hole running true then machine the nose.

make an arbor to hold the part machined crancase on and hold that horizontally in a rotary table or dividing head with tailstock support and mill all the flat surfaces to the outside of the case, boring the cylinder holes at the same setting as machining that surface flat. Then the rounded bottom in a series of facets . Luckily its quite a simple angular shape so not too many compound curves etc to do.

Have a look at the lightweight and 5cc crankcase for ideas.

I’ve just received a box full of engines, in them is a very sad looking Vega V twin,
