I wasn’t much taken up with the “cool” North American commentary, but it is undeniable that an explosion of methods of making things, in particular by automated means, changed for ever the world of the time.
I have recently finished a good book on the subject. “Tools for the job” by LTC Rolt. This is a reprint now sold by the Science Museum. In it, Tom Rolt describes well the evolution of the automated manufacturing process and I think it makes good companion reading with “Exactly” by Simon Winchester
