Looking at the super model oscillating steam engines in the forum at present, I was wondering if any had been designed with variable port timing?

The one I did will vary how much the ports open, a bit like notching up or down on a reverser quadrant so you can run more economically at low speeds/loads.

K.N Harris,s oscillating paddle engine model, detailed in his book, has an eccentric driven plate valve, the timing of which could be varied. The book was called "Model stationary and marine steam engines".

I thought somebody would have done it, I had visions of a pair of concentric rings with the ports in them that could be rotated independently over a few degrees. It would be difficult to make such a system work, unless the engine was a fair size, though.
