Hi I have a miniature clarkson autolock chuck with mt3 taper. If I wanted to use it in the Bridgeport would I have to drill the shank and make a longer draw bar with a whitworth thread?

If the BP has the normal R8 spindle you will need to make an adaptor to slip over the MT3 taper that will fit in the BP spindle, also make a drawbar to length required with a thread to suit the MT" thread.

If you get the ARC adaptor, you will have to make a suitable length drawbar with the Clarkson threads, there is no other way around this. A length of 12mm studding with nuts at the top and the lower end turned down to the Clarkson thread would be the easiest way. The middle part of the studding might have to be reduced in diameter to clear the spindle bore, as the standard bore for 7/16 UNF might be tight.

I have both M2 and M3 taper adaptors in my R8 collection. They are both bought not made by me. I have had a look up the inside and the drawbar hole in the R8 is obscured by the fact that the tang/drift slot is narrower than the diameter of the drawbar. Just thought you should know if thinking of buying one as it may be something to ask the vendor about. If you had some like this the drawbar hole and beyond would need to be drilled out for a morse taper drawbar and the material my be hard.

I also have the style made for tanged tooling like tailstock drill chucks. I once tried to remove the restriction with a solid carbide drill and ruined the drill. The link in my earlier post is for the through bore type.
